The Bearcats won 12-0 in five innings against the Roughriders, won a non-district game against Birdville 10-2 the day after, then went on to beat the Pirates 5-1 earlier this week.
Aledo had run-ruled as well as no-hit Saginaw a few days earlier in the first game the teams played, so they Bearcats did not want to have a let down in the second game while playing at home.
In the first inning Logan Barnes roundball to third base resulted in an error that led to a score. Next batter Lucas Nawrocki drove him in on an a single to put Aledo up 2-0.
The Bearcats broke the game open in the second inning. With the bases loaded Kyle Poindexter came through with a base-clearing triple that drove in three runs. A few batters later, Nawrocki hit a two-run home run over the right field fence. Aledo’s lead was up to 7-0.
The Bearcats kept the momentum up in the third inning. Connor Whitmire drove in two runs with a single. Two batters later, Poindexter hit a sacrifice fly ball to drive in one run.
Later Nawrocki and Will Cayce hit back-to-back RBI singles as Aledo led 12-0.
The Bearcats were able to hold on and win after a scoreless fourth inning.
Poindexter and Nawrocki led the team with four RBI each, with Nawrocki hitting a home run and Poindexter hitting a triple. Whitmire also drove in two runs to help lead the team. Aledo finished with 12 hits and drew three walks.
On the mound, Luke Sandefur pitched four innings and allowed only two hits while striking out eight batters, with some of his breaking balls leaving batters shaking their heads in resignation.
Coach Chad Barry thought the whole team kept things going from the earlier run-rule win earlier in the week, praising the good start in the first inning and Sanderfur’s pitching.
Aledo didn’t have long to celebrate because it had a non-district game against Birdville the following day. The Bearcats not only used the game to keep sharp against a possible playoff opponent, but mostly to get everyone on the bench some action as well.
In the first inning Aledo took the lead on a Reid Huffman sacrifice fly ball. The Hawks tied the score in the second inning on an RBI single before the Bearcats took it back later in the inning.
Jordan Stone was able to score on the base paths. Wilson Sehnem and Kaler Mazon followed with RBI singles before Nawrocki hit a two-RBI double. Aledo led 6-1.
Birdville cut the lead to 6-2 in the third inning with an RBI single. Aledo answered with an RBI triple from Kason Evans followed by a ground out to the shortstop from Asher Little that drove him in. The Bearcats’ lead grew 8-2.
In the fourth inning Aledo added one run when Paxton Psencik grounded into a fielder’s choice to the shortstop. The Bearcats led 9-2.
In the fifth inning Huffman’s ground ball to third base resulted in an error that allowed one run to come in and score. That ended up being the final run of the game as Aledo held on in the final two innings to win 10-2.
Nawrocki led the team with two RBIs on his double. Mazon, Little, Sehnem, Huffman, and Evans each drove in one run. As a team the Bearcats finished with nine hits and drew five walks.
Dane Browne got the start and pitched three innings, allowing two runs, one earned run, on five hits while striking out four. Brady Huffman pitched two scoreless and hitless innings while striking out two. Garrett Love pitched two scoreless and hitless innings as well while striking out four.
Barry was happy with how his team played overall against a possible playoff opponent, but mostly was pleased with how his bench players did when getting live game reps.
“Some of our guys out of the bullpen got some work and quality innings,” Barry said. “Got to see some live hitters.”
Aledo then played Granbury, a team that was also undefeated in district play and a game Aledo knew it probably wasn’t going to be able to cakewalk through.
The Bearcats started the game focused in the first inning. Barnes drove in one run on a ground out to second base. Later in the inning, Luke Gladchuk was able to score on a passed ball as Aledo led 2-0.
In the third inning, Aledo gave up an RBI double that was just out of reach of the right fielder’s glove. The Pirates cut the lead to 2-1, but could not tie the score up despite getting a base runner to third base.
In the fourth inning, the Bearcats were able to get some breathing room. With runners on second and third base with two outs, Sehnem came through with a big line drive single that drove in both base runners. Two batters later, he was driven in on an RBI single from Barnes as Aledo led 5-1.
From there Nawrocki on the mound and later Love in the final two innings were settled in and rolling as well as the defense. Despite giving up some walks to Granbury, Nawrocki, Love, and the defense were able to keep the Pirates hitters from getting more than that one big double earlier in the game.
The Bearcats held on to win 5-1.
Sehnem and Barnes led the team with two RBI each, with Sehnem leading the team with three hits and scoring two runs. As a team, Aledo finished with eight hits and drew three walks.
On the mound, Nawrocki pitched five innings and allowed one run on one hit while striking out eight and walking four batters. Love in his two innings of relief allowed no runs or base runners while striking out four.
Barry thought his team took over in the middle of the game before the pitching and defense never allowed the Pirates to get anything going. He also felt like his bats left some meat on the bone.
“I thought we had a few opportunities where we could have moved some runners,” Barry said. “I didn’t push the issue and let our kids swing. We swung into outs and didn’t get the runners moved so we left some runs out there. We will talk about, work on, and sharpen our approach a little bit.”
Aledo is next scheduled to finish its series at Granbury at 7 p.m. on April 17. The Bearcats have another non-district game at noon on April 18 against Lake Ridge as a part of senior day. Finally Aledo starts its final district series against Azle at 7 p.m. on April 21 on the road.
