Both games had the final score of 10-0, ending after five innings due to run-rule as the Bearcats continue to march their way towards defending their state title.
Aledo’s last game was March 13, eight days before suiting up to play at Northwest for a non-district game that was basically a scrimmage for both teams.
No matter how the game counted, the Bearcats seemed to pick up right where they left off after run-ruling Brewer before the break.
Lucas Nawrocki got things going with a two RBI single in the first inning. Later Kyle Poindexter drove him in with a sacrifice fly to put Aledo up 3-0.
The Bearcats committed a rare fielding error at first base in the first inning, but that was the only thing of note as pitcher Teryn Byrne seemed to overwhelm the Texan hitters.
Luke Gladchuk drove in a run with a single in second inning to make the score 4-0. Despite having the bases loaded with one out, Aledo hitters could not get any more runs home.
In the third inning the Bearcats piled on the runs. Wilson Sehnem dove in one run with a double. Gladchuk followed with an RBI single.
Two batters later with the bases loaded and two outs, a ground ball hit to first base by Will Cayce resulted in an error that drove in two runs. Next batter Dylan Duran and Poindexter hit back-to-back RBI singles to make it 10-0 after three innings.
From there Coach Chad Barry went to his bench and got everyone some playing time. Brady Huffman came in to pitch the final two innings. Aledo did not score any more runs, but did not give up even a sniff of a run on defense as the game ended after five innings due to run-rule.
Gladchuk, Nawrocki, and Poindexter each drove in two runs to lead the team. The Bearcats finished with 12 hits and drew four walks.
On the mound, Byrne allowed no hits or runs through three innings while striking out five and walking two batters. Huffman did not allow any runs through two innings while striking out three batters and allowing one hit. The defense committed only that one error in the first inning.
That good play continued onto Tuesday night when the team played the first game of its district series against Chisholm Trail.
Aledo got on the board in the first inning with back-to-back RBI doubles hits by Logan Barnes and Cayce. Cayce later scored on a passed ball to put Aledo up 3-0 in the first inning.
Nawrocki got the start on the mound for the Bearcats and struck out two of the three batters he faced in a quick first inning that established Aledo’s dominance.
Despite that start, the Bearcat bats had little success in the second and third innings before coming alive in the fourth inning.
With two runners on base, Gladchuk drove in one run with a single. During the next at-bat, a passed ball allowed Sehnem to come in and score a run to make it 5-0 for Aledo.
In the fifth inning, the Bearcats made a two-out rally with the bases loaded spiral into the end of the game. Sehnem came through with a bases clearing triple that scored three runs. Gladchuk followed with a bunt that drove him in as he was able to reach first safely. Next batter Barnes then drove in Gladchuk with a single to make the score 10-0.
Nawrocki, who had only given up one baserunner up until the, allowed his second in the bottom of the fifth inning with a double. He recovered by retiring the next two batters with ease, including a strikeout for his 10th of the game, as Aledo won 10-0.
Sehnem led the team with three RBIs while also scoring three runs himself. Gladchuk had a team high three hits while him and Barnes each drove in two runs. As a team the Bearcats finished with 10 hits and drew four walks.
On the mound, Nawrocki pitched all five innings and allowed no runs or walks while striking out 10 and allowing two hits. The defense behind him committed no fielding errors.
Barry thought the time off was good for his team and his team showed to simply dominant performances, capitalizing off great first innings offensively and shutdown pitching.
Still, with the ultimate goal being another state championship, Barry is always looking for ways his team can be better despite the results being great.
“As far as how we are trying to grow and progress right now, I always try to find areas where we can improve,” Barry said. “Last night I thought we had a couple of situations where we had a chance to get on base or move and score a runner, where we didn’t execute as well as I would like, but it’s early and we will discuss those situations moving ahead and we will take another step forward.”
Aledo is scheduled to host Chisholm Trail at 7 p.m. on March 27 before playing a non-district game at 1 p.m. on March 28 at home against Flower Mound.
