The Aledo Bearcats continued their season with a win on March 27 in Midland, beating highly-ranked El Paso Bel Air in a thrilling overtime game in the regional quarterfinals.

The Bearcats got two goals from Trapper Davis, including the winner in overtime, to pull ahead 2-1 to continue to play at least one more game.

Aledo and Bel Air had similar records coming into the game, with the Bearcats hosting a 20-3-2 record while the Highlanders’ was 21-1-1, but ranking services had Bel Air picked as the favorites.

Played in the middle of the day and with winds gusting up to 30 miles per hour according to Coach Derek Vierling, the team who played with the wind had a big advantage.

Aledo was able to hold off the Highlanders in the first half despite going against the wind. With the game scoreless at halftime 0-0, the Bearcats felt good going into the second half now playing with the wind.

Aledo came through first as Davis scored on an assist from True Voskamp to break the tie and give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead. Despite playing with the wind, the one goal lead did not hold as Bel Air tied the game up at 1-1 and the game went to overtime.

The first overtime period saw Aledo have to defend against the wind. The Bearcats defense held out and in the second period, they took their chance.

“Robby Sloan took the ball up field and passed to Trapper, who faked left and cut back right and shot across the goal for the game winner,” Vierling said.

Vierling, who is retiring from coaching after this season, praised the play of Davis, Voskamp, and Luke Brown offensively. Defensively he had great words for Grant Gartman and Erik Soltow, who went down with an injury during the game and could not return.
