The Phi Beta Mu International Band Fraternity has announced that the Aledo High School Band program under the direction of Joey Paul has been selected as a 2023 recipient of the fraternity’s Earl D. Irons Program of Distinction Award. The purpose of the Earl D. Irons Program of Distinction is to recognize those programs that exhibit and exemplify the founder's ideal of honoring superior achievement, moral uprightness, and promoting the international development of bands.

Aledo was a unanimous choice by a selection committee comprised of band directors from across the United States and Canada. The Aledo program will be recognized in December at the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic held in Chicago.

“It’s a great honor and I am super excited for the program to be recognized on the national level,” Paul said, and added that the staff plans to attend the public presentation in Chicago.

In a letter to Paul, George Hattendorf, chair of the Earl D. Irons Program of Distinction, said other schools could learn from Aledo’s band program.

“ It is also hoped that other bands will use your program as an example to strive to attain these same levels of accomplishment,” Hattendorf said.
