A Saturday to Remember

Inaugural Veterans Day event brings community together

Posted

The Weatherford community lined South Main Street Saturday, Nov. 8, waving flags and cheering as the American Legion’s annual Veterans Day parade made its way to just shy of the Parker County Courthouse and back to the Ninth Grade Center where it began.

Immediately following that, around the Square and down York Avenue, the inaugural event from the recently formed Weatherford Chamber Veteran’s Business Council (VBC), took place.

Highlighted by Weatherford Mayor Paul Paschall reading a proclamation that officially commemorated Nov. 11 as Veterans Day, the free event had vendor booths, students from several elementary schools singing and honoring the Armed Forces, and demonstrations from the Weatherford Police Department’s K-9 unit, among others.

Paschall proudly touted that Weatherford had always had a history of supporting its veterans and that this event proved it but added some words to carry throughout the year.

“Many veterans own businesses in the community go and thank them,” he said. “Go shop there, not just once a year.”

Owner of Hold Fast Golf Grips, VBC Chair Jonathan Gallaway said proceeds from money raised during the event would be donated to the National Vietnam War Museum in Mineral Wells, which had several vehicles showcased which had been brought to the event.

At press time, it was not known how much money was raised but organizers said they were “pleased and encouraged” with the turnout.
