TCA Eagles: Played in the Vanguard Holiday Tourney, winning one game and being competitive in others despite injuries to key players. Cole Massey was named to the all-tournament team.

Aledo Ladycats: Competed in the Sandra Meadows Classic Tournament, finishing 1-2, including a revenge win over Prestonwood Christian Academy.

Weatherford Lady Roos: Captured the Kangaroo Christmas Classic title with an undefeated 4-0 record, led by star guard Landrie Polk.

Cross Country (Page 8): Six Aledo Ladycats — Sofia Brandenburg, Molly Garrison, Madison Larsen, Mykel Murry, Mayden Mitchell, and Micah Neal — were named to the TGCA All-State Team for Class 5A.

Rodeo (Page 9): Several area athletes are leading in the North Texas High School Rodeo Association mid-season standings, including Shane McCulloch (Weatherford) in boys all-around and team roping, Annabelle McNeely (Aledo) in barrel racing, and others in poles, calf roping, and ribbon roping.

Achievements (Page 9): Aledo and Weatherford athletes garnered 40 academic all-state honors for fall sports from the Texas High School Coaches Association. Elite status was awarded to Aledo football player Cole Crawford and Weatherford football player/cross country runner Tate Nobis.

Football (Page 12): Former Aledo Bearcats all-state quarterback Hauss Hejny is reportedly transferring to Oklahoma State after one season at TCU. Hejny, a dual-threat quarterback, is expected to compete for the starting job.

 

January 10

Basketball: Details dominant district wins for both Aledo Bearcat and Ladycat basketball teams against Saginaw on January 3. The Ladycats won 51-19, emphasizing improved energy and free-throw shooting. The Bearcats won 70-44, showcasing a fast-paced, high-scoring style, with Townes Van Huysen leading with 25 points. Both subvarsity teams also swept their Saginaw opponents.

 

Wrestling: Reports on Aledo Bearcat and Ladycat wrestlers competing in the Lamar Invitational, with Brady Powell and Cameron Robbins placing high for the Bearcats, and Ari Mathias for the Ladycats. Coach Ben Shaw notes the team’s growth.

 

January 17

Basketball: Aledo varsity teams were dominating District 5-5A play, securing multiple wins and contending for top spots. Trinity Christian Academy (TCA) Eagles achieved their 19th win of the season and are ranked 8th in the state for TAPPS Class 4A.

 

Football: Aledo juniors Kaydon Finley (wide receiver) and Raycine Guillory (running back) were recognized among Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine’s Texas Top 100 for their outstanding 2024 season performances.

 

Wrestling & Gymnastics: Aledo’s wrestling teams faced tough competition from Azle, with individual wins from Dylan Chandler, Brice Bohn, and Ari Mathias. Impact Athletic Training Center in Aledo had a successful start to their competitive gymnastics season, with several teams and individuals winning awards.

 

January 24

Basketball:

Aledo Bearcats: Defeated Brewer 64-56 to take sole possession of first place in District 5-5A (22-4 overall, 6-0 district). This was their first win over Brewer since the 2020-21 season. Joaquin Pacheco led with 30 points.

Aledo Ladycats: Lost a close game to Brewer 50-46, moving their record to 16-11 overall and 5-2 in district. Despite the loss, the team showed significant improvement and “fight.”

Trinity Christian Academy (TCA) Eagles: Achieved two dominant district wins, defeating Midland Classical 63-51 and Trinity School of Midland 69-21. Coach Jeff Peterson praised the senior leadership and commitment to their game plan.

 

Soccer:

Aledo Ladycats: Lost 1-0 to the #2 ranked Weatherford Lady Roos in a hard-fought match. Addy McElhaney scored the lone goal for Weatherford.

 

Wrestling:

Aledo Bearcats & Ladycats: Had a strong showing at the Tussle at the Trail tournament. Brady Powell won gold in the 175-pound class. Several other wrestlers placed in the top four, qualifying for the Region I Tournament.

 

January 31

Aledo Cheerleaders at Nationals: The Aledo JV cheerleading team placed second, and the Varsity team placed 15th at the NCA National Championship.

 

Aledo Swim Teams Excel: Both Ladycats and Bearcats swim teams finished second in the District 5-5A Meet, with 17 swimmers qualifying for regionals. Haley Roberson was Female Swimmer of the Meet, and Brayden DeBoer was the Bearcats’ high-point contributor.

Basketball Home Sweep: Aledo Ladycats (55-52) and Bearcats (53-47) secured close home victories against Fossil Ridge, with key performances from Brenna Clock and Joaquin Pacheco, respectively.

 

Wrestling Senior Night: Aledo grapplers secured a 42-39 win over Brewer on Senior Night, with senior pinfall victories being crucial.

 

Basketball Rivalry: The No. 8 Trinity Christian Eagles defeated rival No. 4 Lake Country Christian School 77-66 in double overtime.

 

February 7

Lacrosse Debut: Aledo High School is introducing a lacrosse program, with Athan Iannucci hired as the junior varsity head coach and Director of Lacrosse Operations.

Soccer: Aledo boys’ and girls’ soccer teams swept their opponents (Saginaw Chisholm Trail and Keller Fossil Ridge), with the Ladycats moving into state rankings.

 

February 14

Gavin Beard Transferring: Aledo Bearcats starting quarterback Gavin Beard is leaving the program to transfer to Fort Worth All Saints. Despite missing two games, he had a successful season, throwing for 2,573 yards and 35 touchdowns. Lincoln Tubbs and Nash McElree are contenders for the starting QB position next season.

 

Aledo Signing Day Feature: “Football friends to stay teammates in college.” 11 Aledo athletes committed to college sports. Owen Henderson (LB) and Kai Taylor (CB) will continue playing football together at Angelo State University. Other signees include:

Football: Brody Adams (Kilgore College), Blake Burdine (Trinity University), Cody Cartwright (West Texas A&M), Adrian Fuller (Henderson State), Roman Jeffries (Independence College).

Baseball: Brooks Burdine (Air Force Academy), Braden Montgomery (Dallas Christian College).

Track: Maggie Kilburn (Louisiana Monroe), Luke Schabel (Dallas Baptist University).

 

Girls Basketball: “Ladycats claim bi-district title over Birdville.” Aledo Ladycats (22-11) defeated Birdville 53-37 in the Class 5A Division II bi-district contest. Key players included Liz Griffin and Tiara Butler.

Boys Basketball: “Bearcats roll to first-ever district championship.” Aledo Bearcats (26-5) secured their program’s first-ever district title with a 79-54 victory over Azle. Joaquin Pacheco scored 20 points.

Wrestling: “Aledo’s Powell to be alternate at state.” Brady Powell (175-pound division) finished fifth at regionals, becoming a state alternate. Other Bearcats and Ladycats qualified for regionals (e.g., Ari Mathias, Cameron Robbins, Dylan Chandler, Cade Rangel, Joy Stephens).

 

Weekly Player Features: “Ladycat of the Week” (Haley Roberson, Swimming) and “Bearcat of the Week” (Ian Perez, Swimming).

 

Swimming: “Aledo qualifies eight for state.” Eight Aledo swimmers (4 girls, 4 boys) qualified for the state UIL Swim Meet in Austin. Haley Roberson and Victoria Crews qualified for their fourth consecutive year. The girls 200-yard freestyle and 400 freestyle relays set school records. The boys 400 free relay also set a school record.

 

Bearcats Soccer: “Bearcats soccer rolls past Granbury.” Aledo boys team won 6-0 against Granbury, with Trapper Davis scoring twice. They also defeated Saginaw (3-1) and Fossil Ridge (2-0).

Ladycats Soccer: “Ladycats suffer first loss.” Aledo girls team lost 2-1 to Granbury, their first district loss. They previously defeated Saginaw (3-2) and Fossil Ridge (4-0).

 

February 21

Ladycats Powerlifting Success: 20 Aledo Ladycats powerlifters qualified for the regional meet. Byranna Orr (132 lbs) and Ari Mathias (148 lbs) secured first place in their respective weight classes at the district meet.

 

Aledo Swimmers Head to State: Senior Haley Roberson and Victoria Crews are making their fourth consecutive trip to the Class 5A State Swim Meet in Austin. Haley’s younger brother, Kale, also qualified, marking a unique sibling representation. Several school records were set in relays.

Aledo Bearcats Soccer: Secured the top spot in district standings after a tough match against Saginaw.

 

Aledo Ladycats Powerlifting: Bryanna Orr and Ari Mathias qualified for the State Meet after winning their respective weight classes at regionals. The team placed fourth.

 

Aledo Track & Field: Both Bearcats and Ladycats competed in the Northwest Texan Invitational. The Bearcats placed third, and Ladycats placed fourth, with notable individual performances and school records set.

 

Ladycat of the Week: Taylor McKean (Softball) for her pitching performance. Bearcat of the Week: Lucas Nawrocki (Baseball) for his hitting, pitching, and overall performance.

 

Aledo Bearcats Basketball: Joaquin Pacheco was named District 5-5A MVP. Other players and the coaching staff also received honors.

 

Aledo Ladycats Basketball: Elizabeth Griffin, Tiara Butler, and Brooklyn Dempsey were named first-team All-District. Other players received second-team, honorable mention, and academic all-district honors.

 

March 14

Powerlifting: “Area lifters advance to state” - Aledo and Weatherford high school powerlifters qualified for the state meets.

 

Swimming: “Aledo program says farewell to trio of greats” - Aledo High School swimmers Haley Roberson, Victoria Crews, and Avery Faulkner are recognized for their successful careers, including multiple state appearances and school records.

 

Players of the Week: Bearcat of the Week: Luke Gladchuk (Baseball); Ladycat of the Week: Addison Smith (Track and Field).

 

Six lifters from Trinity Christian Academy (TCA) qualified for regional powerlifting, including Dylan Kelly and Addison Shoppach who are repeat qualifiers.

 

Aledo Ladycats and Bearcats won their home relays. The Ladycats secured their win in the final 4x400-meter relay, and the Bearcats won their division. Detailed results for both Varsity and JV teams from Aledo and Weatherford are provided.

 

Aledo’s golf teams competed in the Regional Preview Tournament in Lubbock and the Buzzy Open in Azle. Braden Stokes finished second individually for the Bearcats. The Ladycats won the Buzzy Open tournament.

 

The Aledo Ladycats softball team (ranked #6) defeated Chisholm Trail 12-2 in six innings, driven by strong offense and pitching. Highlights include home runs and key plays by Marina Taveras, Brooklyn Taloa, and Breleigh Mayer.
