School board members, community leaders, political leaders, and administrators gathered at the Weatherford High School cafeteria on July 31 to welcome new teachers to the district.
Weatherford ISD Superintendent Beau Rees began by introducing members of the school board.
“Our board loves this school district; many of them went to high school here in Weatherford, and they bleed Roos blue,” Rees said. Let me promise you that having been superintendent of schools for 21 years, I've worked in four different school districts, that these guys are incredible leaders in that they care about you and they care about kids, and they help us make it all happen.”
Weatherford radio personality Dave Cowley acted as master of ceremonies, sharing that he has been a member of the Weatherford Education Foundation for 20 years. The foundation hosted the lunch.
Weatherford ISD board president Mike Guest encouraged the new teachers to keep their eyes on the goal of helping students learn.
“You see what's happening today – education has become politicized,” Guest said. “Don't listen to the mess. Keep loving our kids, keep educating our kids, be a part of that kid's life.”
At the beginning of the lunch, all attendees received a sheet of paper. Cowley spoke of the positive influence teachers had on his life, and asked the audience members to think of a teacher that made a difference in their lives. He then asked the audience members to write one word that described that teacher.
Words like “loving,” “passion,” “kind,” “graceful,” and “understanding” filled the pages in the room - all fitting aspirations for the new school year.
