AMS bests Hughes
Aledo Middle School began its basketball season by taking four of six games from Burleson Hughes.
Seventh grade: A Team won 49-5, B Team won 41-10, C Team won 42-14.
Eighth grade: A Team lost 40-27, B Team won 27-9, C Team won 28-26.
FISHING
Anglers seventh in tournament
The Aledo Anglers high school fishing team placed in a tournament at Possum Kingdom recently. They are fourth in the league standings, only two points out of first.
Leading Aledo individually at Possum Kingdom were Dominic Rigoli/Declan Lickerman, 16th (also had big bass); Peyton Hills/Tyler Page, 22nd; Garrett Hoff/Maxton Ferreira, 26th.
VOLLEYBALL
WC dominates all-conference
Weatherford College dominated this year’s volleyball all-conference team as voted on by the coaches of the Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference.
Kailee May was named Co-Coach of the Year, sharing the award with Jaylan Thomas of Vernon College. This is May’s third consecutive conference coach of the year award, having led WC to its third straight conference title, a No. 5 national ranking, an overall record of 27-5 and a perfect 14-0 NTJCAC record.
Weronika Urbanska won the Player of the Year Award. The freshman from Warsaw, Poland averaged 4.3 points per set (6th in the nation), 66 service aces (11th) and 395 kills (12th).
Kiana Souza won the Defensive Player of the Year Award. Also a freshman, the San Antonio Harlan product registered 358 digs or 3.28 per set.
Urbanska and Souza were also named All-Region V.
In addition to Urbanska and Souza, Gabby Maldonado (1.97 kills per set, .293 hitting percentage) and Lorena Gomez (6.05 assists per set, 51 service aces, 2.27 digs per set) made first team all-conference.
Second team all-conference honorees included Presleigh Roest, Abby Morris and Abby Hellman.
Weatherford all-district
Seven members of the Weatherford Lady Roos were honored by the league coaches as members of the All-District 3-6A Team.
First-team accolades went to Claire Connor and Emma Thornton, with second-team honors going to Carly Cienega, Berkley Austin-Roark and Reagan Rees. Keegan Hull and Maris Boop are honorable mentions.
