Despite an impressive first game for a sophomore signal caller, the Weatherford Kangaroos lost to the L.D. Bell Blue Raiders Friday night, 23-21 at Kangaroo Stadium.
Luke Gray made the start at quarterback in his first varsity game and looked the part, throwing for an efficient 16 completions on 22 attempts for 177 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
But as a team, Weatherford’s start in the early part of the game put them in a challenging spot. The Roos allowed an 80-yard kickoff return by Bell’s Juan Perez to open the game. Then, on their first offensive play, Weatherford fumbled and gave up an 18-yard Blue Raider return for a touchdown by Jon Rhiddlehoover.
It was 13-0 Bell 12 seconds into the game.
Like many other games across the region, a lightning delay put a 30-minute pause on things in the first half.
The Kangaroos trailed 20-7 at the half after Bell mounted a 91-yard scoring drive at the end of the second quarter.
A 97-yard Weatherford drive was capped off by a 7-yard Brennan Boehl touchdown run. After a 69-yard connection between Gray and receiver Jaime Gray in the end zone, the Roos pulled to 23-21.
Bell missed a 44-yard field goal attempt, but a late Weatherford drive stalled at midfield, giving the Blue Raiders the victory.
Gray finished with six catches for 106 yards.
L.D. Bell outrushed Weatherford 117 yards to 82. Blue Raider Kamron Scott ran for 77 yards. Xavier Craven was the Roos’ top rusher with 28 yards on seven carries.
Micah Moore was Weatherford’s top defender with nine tackles.
The Roos will travel to Azle for a week-two matchup Friday, Sept. 6. The Hornets beat Abilene Cooper 41-34. It is the first meeting between the teams since 1999.
