BOTH ADVANCE: Bearcats earn sweep with 7-1 win over Denton; Ladycats pound 21 hits in 19-1 victory to sweep Richland

Both the Aledo Bearcats and Ladycats won today in respective playoff action as both advance to the next round of the playoffs.

Bearcats 7, Denton 1

Aledo used a six-run fifth inning and another shut-down relief performance from Briley Rodriguez to defeat Denton, 7-1, Saturday at Saginaw High School to sweep the Class 5A bi-district series, two games to none.

Starting pitcher Trever Bruno earned the win on the hill. He struck out seven in the first four innings but was lifted in the fifth. He allowed two hits and a pair of walks. Rodriguez came on with no outs in the fifth and pitched three shutout innings to collect the save. Rodriguez was the winning pitcher in relief in the Bearcats' game-one win on Friday.

With the score tied, 1-1, Aledo swatted four hits and took advantage of two errors, a walk and a hit batter to score six runs in the top of the fifth for a 7-1 advantage. The big hit in the frame was a two-RBI single by Calloway Shands. Shands would score later in the inning on a wild pitch. Truet Knox lined an RBI-single, and Hunter Rosson was credited with a run batted in after being hit with the bases loaded.

In the bottom of the fifth, Bruno began to tire. He hit the lead-off batter and followed with two walks to load the bases as head coach Chad Barry called on Rodriguez. The sidearm lefty struck out the first batter he faced, then got out of the inning by inducing a ground ball as Rosson at shortstop fielded the grounder and tossed to Shands at second who relayed to Arizpe at first for the 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.

Rodriguez followed with consecutive shutout innings to seal the win and send the Bearcats to the area playoffs, where they will face either Arlington Heights or Richland.

Ladycats 19, Richland 1

Aledo designated player (hitter) Alana Smith smashed a home run and two doubles to drive in a game-high six runs to lead the Ladycats to a convincing 18-run win over Richland to sweep the area series 2-0 Saturday afternoon at the Richland High School softball field.

The game was called after five innings due to run rule.

The Ladycats will advance to the regional quarterfinals and will face the winner of the Eaton/Colleyville Heritage area series.

Sparked by a lead-off triple from Lindsey McElroy, the Ladycats scored six runs in the top of the first inning for a 6-0 lead. Smith smashed a three-run homer in the frame, with Mykayla Stroud, Brynn Hellman and Caden Cunningham each driving in a run.

The Ladycats put the game away with nine runs in the third to take a 15-1 lead. The big hits in the frame were a two-RBI double from Smith and a two-run single by Macy Hale.

The Ladycats added two more runs in the fourth for a 17-1 cushion after a two-run home run by Megan Reynolds. Aledo closed the scoring in the fifth on a two-RBI single from Hannah Andrews.

Andrews was the winning pitcher. The senior allowed one run on one hit with two walks and a strikeout in five innings.
