Drew Baker has been named the head varsity boys basketball coach at Aledo High School.
Baker has been the first varsity assistant boys basketball coach at Class 6A Mesquite High School since 2022. He has previously been a head coach for 12 years at various schools, recording more than 200 wins. Prior to Mesquite, Baker was a head coach at Lincoln Christian School in Oklahoma, Johnson City (Texas) High School, Cornerstone Christian School (Texas) and Metro Christian Academy in Oklahoma, where he was also a varsity assistant coach.
“I’m incredibly honored to be named the head basketball coach for the Aledo Bearcats,” Baker said. “I look forward to building strong relationships throughout the community, mentoring young men in our basketball program, and continuing to build on the success the program has already achieved. Aledo is a wonderful community, and my family and I are excited to be a part of everything it represents!”
Baker has made 14 playoff appearances in his career and four state tournament appearances. He was a Coach of the Year nominee for 5A TAPPS in 2018, coach of the SAAABC All-Star game in 2017, and coach for the Jim Thorpe All-Star Game in 2009. He has a bachelor’s from Howard Payne University where he was also a member of the mens’ basketball team.
“We are thrilled to have Coach Baker joining us as our Bearcat basketball head coach,” Aledo ISD Athletic Director Brandy Belk said. “His experience and knowledge will be a gift to our students and this program, and I know he’ll be able to jump right in and build on the success we had last season.”
Baker succeeds Brian Blackburn, who led the Bearcats to their first district championship this season. Blackburn was hired as the head coach of the Florida College Falcons.
“We weren’t looking to leave, and love Aledo. but sometimes God’s timing is not our timing,” Blackburn said.
