Both the Aledo Bearcats and Ladycats basketball teams continued their winning ways during the first half of District 5-5A play over the ice and snow-filled return from the holidays.
On Tuesday, Jan. 7, the Aledo boys picked up a 54-53 nailbiter win at Granbury, while the Ladycats edged the Lady Pirates 46-41.
The teams’ next games were scheduled to take place Friday night, Jan. 10, but due to inclement weather, the contests were moved to Saturday. Nonetheless, the Aledo teams cruised to easy wins over Azle at home – a 64-35 triumph for the girls and an 81-59 victory for the boys.
Bearcats
Senior guard Joaquin Pacheco willed his team to the win at Granbury with a team-high 25 points, but none more important than his free throw with a few seconds remaining. He scored nearly half of his points coming in the fourth quarter. Townes Van Huysen and Enrique Pacheco also registered seven points apiece.
The Bearcats (20-4, 4-0 in district) found themselves down 30-26 at the half and cut the deficit to 45-43 as the final period began.
Against Azle, Pacheco led the charge with 24 points. As a team, Aledo was explosive offensively with 20-plus point outputs in the first (21) and third (26) quarters.
Ladycats
Junior guard Elizabeth Griffin led the Ladycats (16-10, 5-1 in district) with 13 points in the team’s win at Granbury while sophomore Brooklyn Dempsey added eight. Tiara Butler scored seven in the win while seniors Ella Isbell and Kinley Elms tallied six points apiece.
The Ladycats slowly built a 10-point lead heading into the final quarter against the Lady Pirates and then held off a 17-12 late charge by Granbury.
Against Azle, the Ladycats were in charge from the outset, leading 20-10 after the first quarter. A 22-5 run in the third quarter made the lead insurmountable at 56-26 entering the final quarter.
Butler led the charge with 13 points while Griffin added 12. Kate Jackson was also a big contributor with 10 points while Jaylee Owens had eight.
Subvarsity
Furthermore, each subvarsity team on the boys and girls side were victorious in their games as well for two more program sweeps apiece on the season.
The Bearcats junior varsity defeated Granbury 56-39 and Azle 57-37, while the freshmen downed Granbury 47-18 and Azle 59-34. No individual scores were available.
The Ladycats JV defeated Granbury 50-43 as Sarah Edwards scored 12, Sawyer Voight scored 11 and Harper Fink added 10. They defeated Azle 57-15 behind 11 points from Voight, 10 from Edwards and eight each from Kennedy Cardenas and Kate Lowe.
The Ladycats freshmen edged Granbury 28-25 Sonsoles Rosado scored 10 and Emma Ralph had eight. They defeated Azle 57-9 as Rosado tallied 15 and Sydney Fleury scored eight.
Split with Brewer
On Tuesday, Jan. 14, the Bearcats defeated visiting Brewer 64-56 to take sole possession of first place in District 5-5A. Meanwhile, the Ladycats dropped a 50-46 contest to the Lady Bears and are tied for second in the league.

The Ladycats and Bearcats will travel to Saginaw Chisholm Trail on Tuesday, Jan. 21. The girls tip off at 6:15 p.m. and the boys will follow.
