A Palo Pinto State Park Primer

September 12, 2019 @ 6:30 pm

James Adams, superintendent of Palo Pinto Mountains State Park, will present an update on the park’s status at the next meeting of the Cross Timbers Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas. The meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, at Mount Pleasant School, 213 Raymond George Way in Weatherford.

It’s been eight years since the state began buying land for what will be Palo Pinto Mountains State Park. While the 4,400-acre park is still not open, it may be getting closer after the Texas Legislature approved some funding this year.

Adams grew up in Palo Pinto County and has been the park’s superintendent since June 2017. He’ll discuss the property’s origins, landscape and wildlife, plans for park amenities, and a construction timeline. The park is located near Strawn on former ranch land that includes plants, wildlife, and geological features of the Western Cross Timbers ecoregion. The 90-acre Tucker Lake is planned as the park’s centerpiece.

Adams has a bachelor’s degree from Tarleton State University and a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Texas at Arlington. He has spent 10 years working in various areas of operations at Texas state parks, including Cedar Hill State Park, Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, Lake Arrowhead State Park in Wichita Falls, and most recently as site manager for the South Sulphur Unit of Cooper Lake State Park, just north of Sulphur Springs.

Visitors are welcome and light refreshments will be available.

The mission of the Cross Timbers Chapter is to promote the conservation, research and use of native plants and plant habitats in Texas through education, outreach and example.  For more information visit http://npsot.org/wp/crosstimbers.
