Bearcats in playoff position after 2OT win at Boswell; Ladycats fall in girls' 6-5A finale

Posted

Aledo guard Jake Hawkins broke a tie in the second overtime with a timely three-pointer and Andres Valdez canned four consecutive free throws in the last 22 seconds to seal the win as the Bearcats outlasted Boswell, 66-63, Tuesday night in a key boys' District 6-5A basketball game at Boswell High School.

The win raises the Bearcats' district mark to 5-7 , while Boswell drops to 4-8. The Bearcats are in fourth place alone and hold a one-game lead over Boswell in the race for the final playoff spot with two games remaining. Aledo will close out district play at Chisholm Trail and at home against Saginaw, while Boswell has games remaining with Eaton and Azle.

Valdez scored 12 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter and both overtimes. Cam Caldwell led the 'Cats with 22 points.

Boswell 44, Ladycats 41

Aledo fought back from a 15-point fourth-quarter deficit but fell just short as league champion Boswell escaped with a 44-41 win over the Ladycats Tuesday night in the girls' District 6-5A basketball finale at Boswell High School.

The Ladycats finish in third place and will face Wichita Falls Rider next week in the bi-district playoffs. Site, day and time has yet to be determined.

Boswell broke open the game with a 12-4 run in the second period to take a 25-16 lead at the half. The Lady Pioneers took a 36-25 lead into the fourth quarter and scored on consecutive buckets for a 40-25 advantage to begin the final stanza.

The Ladycats followed with a 14-4 run - thanks in part to four points from Elizabeth Allanach and three each by Taylor Morgan and Sarah Haeussler - to cut the lead to three points before time ran out.

Haeussler led all scorers with 22 points while also pulling down eight rebounds.

Aledo junior post Sarah Haeussler goes up strong for a layup Tuesday during the Ladycats' loss at Boswell. Haeussler led all scorers with 22 points.
