Arlington Seguin scored 33 points in the second half but it was not enough as the Aledo Ladycats held on for a 50-46 victory Saturday afternoon in the third-place game of the Ladycats Invitational 2016 played at the Aledo High School gym.

The tournament concludes the non-district portion of the season for the Ladycats. Aledo will open District 6-5A play at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Chisholm Trail High School.

Freshman guard Taylor Morgan led all scorers with 24 points, while junior post Sarah Haeussler dominated the glass with a game-high 14 rebounds and two blocked shots.

Aledo played stout defense in the first half, limiting the explosive Lady Cougars to three first-quarter points and 13 at the half as the Ladycats led 28-13 at the break.

Seguin outscored AHS 16-13 in the third period to cut the Ladycats' lead to 39-29 as the contest moved to the fourth quarter.

The Lady Cougars used momentum gained in the third quarter to go on a 12-4 run early in the fourth period to cut the Ladycats' lead to 43-41. Seguin guard Trinitee Cannon scored eight points in the Lady Cougars' run.

Knowing her team needed a boost to slow down the Lady Cougars, Morgan drove to the basket and drew a shooting foul. The freshman calmly drained both free throws to increase the Aledo advantage to 45-41 with 3:31 remaining in the game.

On Seguin's ensuing possession, forward Darnesha Ferguson drew a foul and she connected on a pair of free throws to cut the Ladycats' lead to 45-43 with 2:46 left to play.

Once again, Morgan tried to draw a foul as she drove into the lane, but three Lady Cougars were waiting. But Morgan adjusted her drive with a twisting move and sank a layup with a tear-drop shot to extend the lead to 47-43 with a little more than two minutes remaining.

Seguin continued to stay aggressive, and a drive to the lane was thwarted when Haeussler drew a charge with 1:02 left on the clock. But Aledo could not take advantage, and Seguin made them pay. Guard Sumaiyah Abdur-Rahim was left alone on the right baseline, and with 49 seconds left to play she hit a three-point bucket to cut the lead to one point, 47-46.

After the trey, Morgan went back to work, driving the lane and once again drawing a foul with 30 ticks on the clock. Her first attempt bounced on the rim and fell in, and she swished the second charity shot to increase the Ladycats' lead to 49-46.

Seguin tried to tie the score with a three-point attempt that fell short, but after the Lady Cougars grabbed the rebound Aledo sophomore guard Elizabeth Allanach stole the ball and was fouled with three seconds left in the contest. She hit the back end of her two double-bonus free throws to seal the win.

Also scoring for the Ladycats were freshman post Janessa Payne with 14 points, Haeussler with six, Allanach with three, freshman guard Riley Sale with two and freshman guard Cheney Huddleston with one.
