Arlington Seguin went on a 23-9 run in the third quarter to come from behind and defeat the Aledo Ladycats, 41-35, Thursday morning at the Ladycat Invitational 2016 opener at the Aledo High School gym.
The Ladycats will continue tournament play at 3 p.m. today against Plano Home School Athletic Association.
Aledo freshman guard Taylor Morgan led all scorers with 20 points, while junior post Sarah Haeussler almost recorded a double double with eight points and a game-high 12 rebounds, including five offensive boards.
The Ladycats played solid defense in the first half, limiting talented Seguin to eight first-quarter points and nine points in the second period.
Paced by a pair of jumpers from senior guard Erin Weiss and five points by Haeussler, the Ladycats led 14-8 after the opening quarter. Aledo stretched its lead to 18-9 in the second quarter when senior post Chloe Mefford found freshman post Janessa Payne for a layup.
Later in the quarter, the Ladycats extended their lead to 24-13 after a three-point bucket and a layup from Morgan. Morgan closed the first-half scoring by sinking a pair of free throws as the Ladycats led 26-17 at the break.
Seguin began the third quarter with an 8-2 run to cut the Ladycats’ lead to 28-25. Aledo maintained a three-to-five-point advantage for the next four minutes, but Seguin closed the third-period scoring with a 9-2 run to take a 40-35 lead into the fourth quarter.
Aledo closed the gap to six points, 49-43, after a Morgan layup with 4:11 remaining in the game. But each team would only score one basket for the rest of the game as Seguin held on for a six-point win.
Also scoring for the Ladycats were Payne with five points, Weiss with four, Mefford with three, Abby Losos and Riley Sale, each with two, and Elizabeth Allanach with one.
