Bearcats earn first win of season with 58-54 overtime victory over Western Hills

Posted

Aledo canned three three-pointers in overtime and held on defensively to take a 58-54 victory over Fort Worth Western Hills Tuesday night in a non-district contest at the AHS gym for the Bearcats first win of the young season.

The Bearcats (1-2) will return to non-district action at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29 at home against Birdville.

Guard Tre Owens knocked down consecutive threes to begin the overtime session, and the Bearcats never trailed from that point. With 1:31 left in the extra session, guard Cameron Yates swished a three-pointer for the right perimeter to increase the AHS  advantage to 56-52.

Western Hills sank a bucket to cut the lead to two points and got the ball back on a turnover. But Yates stole the ball and whipped a quick pass to Owens, who was fouled with 16 seconds remaining.

Owens hit the back end of a one-and-one to extend the Bearcats' lead to 57-54. On the visitors' next trip down the court, Owens grabbed a rebound and was fouled with four ticks left on the overtime clock.

Owens hit one of the two charity shots to seal the victory.

Senior post Cam Caldwell - who scored 10 of the last 12 Bearcats' points in regulation - led Aledo with 18 points. Owens finished with 12 points, with Jake Hawkins adding 10. Junior post Ayden Smith led Aledo on the glass with seven rebounds.
