Optimist Names WHS Tex, Tex-Anne Recipients: Pictured (from left) are Terrell Saltarelli, Baha Eren, WHS Assistant Principal Tammy Turan, Natalie Mitchell, and Stephanie Novak (courtesy photo).Four Weatherford High School students were recognized by the Weatherford Optimist Club as Tex and Tex-Anne recipients for both January and February. Terrell Saltarelli, Baha Eren, Natalie Mitchell, and Stephanie Novak were all recognized at the recent Optimist Club meeting. Also, all four students are in the top 5 percent of their class.
The Weatherford FFA participated in judging contests at the Texas Farm and Ranch Expo in Abilene on Wednesday, February 23. The Dairy Products team placed 4th overall with Amanda Morris receiving 7th high individual and Tara Murray 10th high individual out of 77 participants. The Wildlife team placed 2nd overall with Sammy Buczkowski as 7th high individual and Tyler Crandall 8th high individual out of 55 participants. The Range team placed 4th overall with Austin Ingram receiving 5th high individual out of 39 participants. The Poultry team placed 3rd overall with Tyler Pratt placing 8th high individual and Austin Kinney 11th high individual out of 92 contestants. Coaches of these teams are K.C.
Last week the Weatherford FFA traveled to the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo to exhibit their market swine projects. Mason Castner, Tyra Brunz, Rachel Bedinger, Jake Calloway, Carson Terrell, Christin Gasca, Cooper Bench, and Shelby Morgan have all been working hard on their projects since last October.
For Rachel and Jake, that hard work payed off. Jake placed ninth in his cross class that had 75 entries in it and Rachel placed third out of 46 entries in her Duroc class making the premium sale with Red Dawg, her Duroc barrow, on Saturady afternoon.
The Weatherford High School Blue Belles performed at the TCU vs. Utah women's basketball game Feb. 22 at Daniel Meyer Coliseum in Fort Worth. The Belles performed one of their contest numbers, "Hey Baby," an energetic pom routine (courtesy photos).

Congratulations to the Weatherford High School senior class for winning the $5,000 "My School is Cool" Hulen Mall competition in the fall.
WHS Senior representatives accepted the $5,000.00 check from Hulen Mall Manager Kevin Davies at a celebration luncheon Feb. 17 at Hulen Mall in Fort Worth.
Weatherford High School outscored the Fort Worth high schools by over 60,000 points.

Members of the Weatherford HS Band participated at the 2011 Region 7 UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest on Saturday, February 19 at Crowley HS.
WHS Band Results:
62 GOLD MEDALISTS – earning 1st divisions on Advanced (College) level Solos/Ensembles
9 SILVER MEDALISTS – earning 1st divisions on Intermediate level Solos
1 BRONZE MEDALIST - earning a 1st division on Moderate level solo
36 students certified to compete at the 2011 Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest on May 28 on the campus ofUniversity of Texas at Austin. Students were required to perform advanced solos by memory to achieve this opportunity. 31 soloists and 8 ensembles are eligible to compete.
There were many outstanding performances during the day and we are most proud of all band students who participated!

Weatherford FFA member Ali Cantrell was successful in her attempt to catch a wild 500-pound calf recently at the San Antonio Rodeo.
In the Calf Scramble event, 24 determined 4-H and FFA members competed with one another to catch, halter, and coax across the winner's line.
There were only 12 calves to catch and the winners received an $800 certificate to purchase a breeding animal with the intent to raise and return to the stock show the following year.
Over the weekend, the wrestling team traveled to Amarillo to compete in the UIL Region 1 Wrestling Championships. The wrestlers wrestled well over the two days and left with two top 6 place winners.
Josh Brown finished sixth and qualified as a state alternate. Joseph Payne finished third and qualified to wrestle in the state wrestling tournament to be held in Austin on February 25-26 at the Delco Center.
While competing in the regional tournament Joseph improved his record to 50-4 and has tied the school record of 50 wins in a single season.
