The Lady Roos varsity softball team clinched first place in District 4-5A Friday with an 8-3 win at home against Arlington Bowie.
The game was close until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Lady Roos scored five runs. Weatherford's batters came through with a total of 11 hits, including a triple by junior Alicia Rich.
Weatherford is currently 19-9 overall and 12-0 in district play. The Lady Roos' goal for the season is to finish undefeated in district play. They will be finishing off their district games this week with games against Arlington Martin on Tuesday (in Arlington) and Arlington Sam Houston on Friday at home. Game times are 5:30 p.m. for the varsity, followed by the junior varsity contest at 7:30 p.m.
Golf tryouts for athletes in grades 9-12 for the 2011-2012 school year will be May 4 at Canyon West beginning at 4 p.m.
Golfers must wear proper golf attire (collared shirts) and provide their own transportation to and from the course.

Shelby Carter, senior captain of the WHS Blue Belles, was selected on Sunday as one of the new Tyler Jr. College Apache Belles.
Fifty-two hopefuls started out the audition on Saturday morning, and only 19 were selected to continue to the finals on Sunday.
At the formal announcement on Sunday afternooon, Carter was one of nine dancers to make the squad for 2011-12. She will be a member of the 65th line of Apache Belles who are internationally famous for their highkicks and jazz dance style.

The Melon Vine
The 2010 Melon Vine received a Distinguished Merit award at UIL Interscholastic League Press Conference (ILPC) last weekend. Only the top 10 percent of Texas high school yearbooks receive this award.
Also, Kelcie Thielepape Stephanie Recchia will compete in the UIL Regional Meet this weekend in Lubbock.
Thielepape won first place in editorial writing at the District 4-5A meet. She also placed second in news writing.
Recchia also earned a regional spot by placing third in news writing at the district competition.
Weatherford High School’s band has had a perfect contest ratings year earning all Division 1 ratings at each contest attended from all judges.

Members of the Weatherford High School FFA Meat Judging Team advanced to state after placing fourth overall at Area 5 contest Saturday in Lubbock.
Individually, Jake Calloway placed 10th out of 40 competitors at the Area 5 contest. The state meet will be May 7 in College Station.
In the Meat Judging contests, students enter actual Processing Plants and identify the meats. They also were required to dress appropriately and meet all safety regulations.

Weatherford High School junior Ali Cantrell is one of only 10 students in the state to be selected as a candidate for the Ford Leadership Scholars Program through FFA.
Cantrell and nine others from Texas will take part in a telephone interview to see who wins the Ford Scholars Program honor which includes a $1,000 scholarship as well as one week of training with industry leaders this summer.
Lady RoosWeatherford High School's Lady Roos golf team won its second district championship in a row, this time taking the District 4-5A crown Tuesday at Woodhaven Country Club in Fort Worth. With the win, Weatherford advances to the Regional Tournament April 18-19 in Lubbock.
The Lady Roos shot a combined two-day total of 733, followed by second-place Arlington High at 755.
Individual winners for the Lady Roos included Keegan Moore, second place; and Jake Strickland, fourth place. Also, All-District selections include Moore, First Team All-District; Strickland, First Team All-District; Ransear, First Team All-District; Katy Swan, Second Team All-District; and Tina Setti.
