An 'Elements of Drawing" workshop will be from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8 at the Firehouse Gallery at 119 Palo Pinto St., Weatherford, TX. This one day workshop, offered by local artist John Stout, will have an emphasis in Perspective, Composition/Contour, Line drawing, Contrast, Shading, Texture, and Ellipses.
John Stout, son of a sign painter and inventor in League City, Texas in the 50s and 60s, first honed his artistic skills in his father's sign shop at age 14. In the Army 1961-64, John was assigned to painting murals in Europe in addition to his regular military duties.
He discovered his love for carving nearly 25 years ago, when his first wife asked him to carve some toys as Christmas gifts for their children. Later he moved to reproducing carousel horses for private collectors around the country.
"People who know me for my murals and paintings are always surprised to find out I can carve. But carving is just another art form. My dad taught me that if I know the arts, what field or what materials I work with are irrelevant. My focus is always on artistic elements, no matter what project I do," Stout said.
John studied art in the U.S. and Europe. His accomplishments as a painter and graphic artist are many and varied and his work is represented in private collections in Israel, Germany, England, Canada, France, Alaska and several states in the United States.
The Weatherford Art Association will meet at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 26 at the Firehouse Gallery, 119 W. Palo Pinto in Weatherford. Guest artist, Dana Strittmatter, will have an art critique at 6 p.m., and all members are encouraged to bring a piece of art for the critique. The general meeting will begin at 7 p.m. with guest artist John Stout presenting a drawing demonstration as a precursor to a drawing workshop he will offer on Dec. 8. Donny Edwards will perform a special matinee performance at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 31 at the Texas Opry in Weatherford. Edwards is a two-time world champion Elvis Tribute Artist, who has performed on hit television shows such as NBC's "Next Best Thing" and "The Young and the Restless." He has also played with some of Elvis's original band members such as D.J. Fontana, Elvis' drummer, and his back up group the Jordanaires.
"We are going to come through there and bring back the spirit of Elvis, with his persona and the atmosphere,” Edwards said. “That's the difference between me and other tribute artists, we are very authentic and even sing in Elvis' original key. And we have a good time doing it.”
Edwards said being Elvis has always come naturally for him and that from an early age people would mistake him for the King.
"My mom said when I was a kid and an Elvis record would come on I knew how to shake my leg. I was an avid Elvis fan and it always stuck with me. When kids were jamming out to Bon Jovi, I viewed Elvis as the best,” Edwards said. “As I got older, people started to comment on my look. When I hit my teenage years I started to look more like him and people said, ‘Hey Elvis.' It’s funny because I was always drawn to it."
Edwards was working as a manager at a Target in Houston when he was contacted by a talent scout who wanted him to work as a 50s-style Elvis Tribute Artist in Oregon.
