Leah Vann
The annual Light the Night walk with Team Leah Vann will be at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21 on 7th Street in Fort Worth. Walk or donate to help the fight against leukemia (AML). Leah Vann, a senior at Aledo High School, was diagnosed on Nov. 10, 2011 with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). After a year of treatment at Cook’s Children’s and St. Jude’s hospitals Leah remains in remission. Leah is an honored hero and a survivor. Her father is a remembered hero, Dr. Barry L. Vann. All ages are invited to participate in the 2-3 mile walk. Students can use this as volunteer opportunity. The Texas Business Women of Parker County will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 18 at Weatherford College in the Strain Room of the Doss Student Center. John M. Rogers will be the guest speaker and will speak about the Health Care Act. Texas Business Women is for women of all ages in Parker County who work at home or outside the home. The Parkinson Support Group of Tarrant County will meet at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 29 at Broadway Baptist Church in Fort Worth. The Aledo Project Prayers for the classes of 8-12 will be from 7:30-9:15 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 12 at Agape Coffee Haus. The purpose of Project Prayer is to have every student in Aledo from the 8th grade through 12th grade prayed for, by name, on a regular basis. Participants can either exchange a current prayer card or pick up a prayer card for 10 students if you don't have one. The Parker County Heritage Society Talking Tombstone Tour will be from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20 at Old City Greenwood Cemetery, 300 Front St., Weatherford. Tours begin every 15 minutes. Tickets will be available at the front cemetery gate the day of the event and cost $10 for adults and $5 for children 5-9 years old. Baby strollers are not allowed and the tours are not recommended for those requiring walking assistance or small children. There are no onsite restrooms.

The Texas Tech Goin’ Band from Raiderland will have a rehearsal and performance from 2-3:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 19 at Bearcat Stadium as part of their practice routine for the Texas Tech vs. TCU football game on Saturday.
Aledo’s Venture Crew 2001 will hold an open house for potential new members at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25. Venturing is a youth program of the Boy Scouts of America for young men and women who are 14 years of age or 13 years of age and have completed the eighth grade and under 21 years of age. Venturing's purpose is to provide positive experiences to help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults. Venture Crew 2001 formed last winter and has participated in many activities, including kayaking with a former Olympic competitor, camping in San Marcos, Texas, rock climbing and attending Scarborough Fair. The Moncrief Cancer Institute at UT Southwestern will have a mobile mammography unit in Aledo from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29 at Moss Insurance Group, 705 N. FM 1187. Fully funded mammograms will be provided to women who do not have insurance. An appointment is required by calling 800-405-7739.
