After a week of weather that more closely resembles Minnesota than Texas, the Aledo Bearcats and Ladycats competed in their first official meet of the 2025 track season this past Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Argyle Relays.
Both Aledo varsity teams placed second in their respective divisions. The Ladycats scored 105 points behind Northwest Byron Nelson with 122, while the Bearcats tallied 78 to 120 for Nelson.
Winning gold medals for the Ladycats were Sofia Brandenburg in the 800-meter run, which had a 1-2 finish with Mykel Murry taking second, and the 4x400 relay of Murry, Mayden Mitchell, Brandenburg, and Addison Smith.
“The meet was good, very competitive,” Ladycats coach Mike Pinkerton said. “It was a really good first meet. Very proud of the way the girls competed.”
Gold medals for the Bearcats were won by Braylon Brown in the pole vault, Adam Averett in the discus, and Trey Warner in the 400.
“Ran good for the first meet, one of our fastest times for the first meet in the 4x400. Adam Averett will have several school records in multiple events before the season is over,” Bearcats coach Andrew Clark said. “Braylon won the pole vault, and it was a competitive pole vault meet, so that’s a great start.”
Both the Bearcats and Ladycats will compete in the Northwest Invitational at Northwest High School in Justin on Friday, Feb. 28. They will host the Bearcat Relays on March 6.
