The Town of Annetta recently hosted a Toys for Tots drive from Oct. 20 through Dec. 18. Just before the Nov. 16 Annetta City Council meeting, all members of the council dropped off toys, which essentially filled one large toy box along with other donations.

“I want to thank Rico Remigio for coordinating the Toys for Tots drive at the Annetta City Hall,” Annetta Mayor Sandy Roberts said. “It is an honor to be part of a community that is so giving of others. I look forward to making this an annual event.

“I wish everyone a very Happy Holiday and a safe and Happy New Year!”

Originally, the toy drive ended on Dec. 8 with two full boxes and one bicycle donated. After a request from Toys for Tots, the toy drive was extended to Dec. 18, which resulted in one full additional box of toys donated. Tracy Jack commented on a Facebook post “We’re so glad you extended the deadline. My daughter had her birthday party over the weekend and the girls all brought Toys for Tots! — all my daughter’s idea!”

Remigio, a 22-year Navy veteran, first volunteered with Toys for Tots while stationed in Columbus, Ohio while co-located with the Marines.

“I saw the joy in families when we were distributing toys, and I immediately fell in love with this program,” Remigio exclaimed.

Julie Hale, Toys for Tots coordinator for this area, said the need for toys is growing every year.

“Last year we served a little over 5,500 children and we were prepared for about 7,500 this year. We had an overwhelming surge in applications for assistance: over 11,700,” Hale said. “We couldn’t fill the need without communities like yours pitching in and helping out.”

All toys donated will benefit children in Hood, Somervell, Parker, and Erath counties. To learn more about Toys for Tots and how you can help or donate for our area, visit toysfortots.org.
