The final Weatherford council meeting of May featured multiple approvals and actions on properties and ended with young students getting their first taste of local government by petitioning the council for playground equipment.

A presentation of the Weatherford Housing Authority was presented to the council with executive director Rosie Muciño and vice chair April Leppla describing the board’s mission and goals, as well as statistics and resources the group uses to oversee their area of city growth. The mission includes assisting residents through housing assistance and enhancing quality of life.

The council then approved the reappointment of city board chairs. Ken Davis, Brandon Garrett, Tammy Gazzola, and James Hotopp were approved for reappointment to the Economic Development Board, and Joe Harnett and Kathy Wylie were approved to the Parks and Recreation Board.

Actions were taken on several properties in the city, bringing Director of Development Services Kaleb Kentener to the podium often to describe each ordinance. Approval was made for the final plat of 70 residential lots and nine open space lots located on Old Dicey Road, approval was made for subdivision improvements for Centerpoint Addition and for a request for final plat approval of 10 lots for Wossum Ranch Phase 6 on Eagle Drive. Approval was made for a request on a final plat approval for two residential lots on 700 W. Park Avenue. It was approved to consider the request of a conditional use permit for a 6.42 acres tract at 2502 Old Brock Road for a proposed office and storage facility.

During non-agenda items, the council heard from two elementary school students.

“I’m so proud that you are here,” Mayor Paul Paschall said, welcoming the young spokespersons.

Camryn Coffey and Melanie Maples presented an idea to the council. Because improvements and upgrades to McGratton Park on N. Main Street were approved last month, the children thought it would be nice if some of the old play equipment could be donated to their “small, local church,” Friendship Baptist Church off FM 51. The two friends were already raising money for play equipment.

“Hello Council, my name is Camryn Coffey. We are here to ask you for a few favors,” the first student read while leaning into the microphone. “We were wondering if it was possible for you to donate some of the old equipment from McGratton Park to our fundraiser and that you can donate it possibly to us cheap. Would $10 be enough? I’m kidding.” The latter comment drew chuckles from the council and visitors. “But not only would you be giving the old equipment a second life but we would also think you were really cool.”

Melanie Maples sweetened the deal by offering to name play equipment after city leaders.

“We have come up with some names for the new equipment,” Maples read. “For Councilman Ticzus we have the Tuczus Tumbler, for Councilman Smith, the Zack Attack, for Councilwoman Wilder would be Wilder Ride, for Councilman Williams, Luke’s Lookout, and last but not least, for Mayor Paschal, the Popular Paul’s Slide. And as a bonus, the Uptop Hotopp Swing (for city manager James Hotopp)”

“Well, I’ll tell you one thing,” Paschal concluded. “In my six years up here, I’ve not seen better speakers than those two right there.”
