Shaw named head coach at Aledo

L.D. Bell High School wrestling coach Ben Shaw has been tapped to head the program at Aledo High School.

Before serving at Bell High School in the Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD, he was an assistant wrestling and softball coach at Coppell High School Ninth-Grade Campus in Coppell ISD, and an assistant wrestling, football, and baseball coach at Centennial High School in Burleson ISD. Shaw was also a math teacher at each of those schools.

“Coach Shaw will be a great addition to our coaching staff at Aledo High School with nearly a decade of experience coaching wrestling with great success,” Aledo ISD Athletic Director Brandy Belk said. “His technical knowledge and ability to develop wrestlers will help our still-young program to grow exponentially.”

In two years at L.D. Bell, Shaw has coached 17 regional-qualifying wrestlers and one state qualifier. L.D. Bell also had its first girls regional finalist in more than a decade under Shaw. As the varsity assistant coach at Coppell, Shaw helped coach more than 20 state qualifiers, with more than 10 placing at the Class 6A State Meet. Shaw started the wrestling program at Centennial in 2015 and coached the school’s first state wrestling medalist during his tenure at Centennial.

“I’m honored to become the next head wrestling coach for Aledo High School,” Shaw said. “I want to say thank you to Aledo ISD for trusting me to grow and continue the success of Aledo Bearcat wrestling. I’m excited to cultivate a culture of hard work, toughness and grit through a competitive environment.”

Shaw has a bachelor’s degree from Hardin-Simmons University. His teams are consistently participating in community service projects like canned food and coat drives as well as Toys for Tots collections and donations.
