Ladycat head coach Nikki Hyles knew heading into the area matchup against the No. 1 ranked team in Texas was going to be tough sledding. With just a pair of seniors on the roster, her young team exceeded expectations this season, compiling a 28-10 record and securing second place in District 5-5A with a 10-2 league record.
On Thursday, Feb. 15, when Aledo met up with Mansfield Timberview in Cleburne, the Ladycats took a massive step up in competition. The Lady Wolves proved their top ranking as they ended Aledo’s playoff run and their season with a 70-32 victory.
As they’ve done all season, the Ladycats poured their hearts out on the floor. Facing a stalwart opponent that had virtually every advantage a team could have in the game of basketball, Aledo put forth their best effort in their attempt to fell a giant.
August Carlone came off the bench for Aledo to lead her team in scoring with a season-high 12 points. Unfortunately, the Lady Wolves had scouted the rest of the Ladycats well, keeping the rest of the team out of double-digit scoring in the game.
Timberview started off the game like they were shot out of a cannon. The Lady Wolves put up 16 first-quarter points to take a commanding lead over Aledo early in the game.
Heading into the second quarter trailing by nine, the Ladycats continued to battle against a superior opponent. By halftime, Timberview had doubled up Aledo’s production while taking a 34-15 lead into the break.
The second half was just as bleak as the first half. The Lady Wolves outpaced Aledo 36-17 in what would be the final 16 minutes of the Ladycat season and the last moments in the high school careers of Caroline Browning and Natalie Anderson.
