Both the Aledo Bearcat and Ladycat basketball teams competed in pre-district tournaments over the weekend with both squads earning a quality result. The Bearcats were the runners up of the Abilene Key City Classic Tournament while the Ladycats nabbed second place as well in the Burleson Tournament.
The boys fell to Lubbock Cooper 72-67 in the opener Thursday night, which was Aledo’s first loss of the regular season. After that, the Bearcats regrouped for a pair of wins over El Paso Jefferson (73-27) and Midland Christian (42-31). On Saturday, Aledo defeated Midland Legacy for 62-58 for the consolation championship.
The Ladycats opened their tournament run with a pair of dominant wins Thursday over Parish Epsicopal (61-4) and Lubbock Coronado (52-29) with junior guard Elizabeth Griffin leading the way with 17 and 23 points, respectively. On Friday, the Ladycats rolled past Waco University 47-23 and Snyder (41-20) to set up a championship match with Prestonwood Christian. In the tournament final, Kate Jackson, Griffin, Kinley Elms and Tiara Butler each reached double-digit point totals, but ultimately the Ladycats came up just short 61-56. For their efforts, Griffin and Butler were both named to the all-tournament team.
The Bearcats (10-1) then defeated Springtown 87-46 in non-district play Tuesday night while the Ladycats (10-7) were idle. Up next, the Aledo boys will compete in the Weatherford Tournament from Thursday through Saturday while the Ladycats will open district play at 7:30 p.m. at Brewer.
