Tonight's game between the Aledo Bearcats and the Highland Park Scots, is the 2012 edition of a 13 year tradition, the Tom Landry Classic, on the SMU campus.
The sun has finally fallen below the press box at Gerald Ford Stadium and given the Aledo fans some shade as the officials toss the coin at midfield.
Highland Park wins the toss and will receive.
The Scots start from their 17 yard line. 3 plays to a first down at the 33. A penalty on the Bearcats defense gives Highland park a first down at the Aledo 42 yard line.
The Bearcat defense holds and the Scots quick kick to the Aledo 15 yard line. The Bearcat defense gets things started off right.
Pate Davis keeps for 14 yards and a first down on the first play. A couple of Caleb Frysinger runs, and a penalty on the Scots, give the Bearcats the ball at the Highland Park 48 yard line with a first and 10. Pate Davis and Caleb Frysinger take turns again and Aledo has a first and 10 at the Scots 24 yard line.
A turnover gives Highland Park the ball back at their 19 yard line. 2 first downs and the Scots are in Aledo territory at the 49. Another first down to the 37 as the first quarter ends.
The second quarter begins with the Scots driving on the Aledo 37 yard line. Another quick kick goes into the end zone and Aledo has the ball at their own 20.
Aledo uses the pass, and two big Pate Davis to Taco Anderson plays to score on this drive. The extra point is good and the Bearcats lead 7-0 with 9:57 left in the first half.
After a nice return by Highland Park, Aledo intercepts a pass and takes over again on their own 47 yard line.
Big plays from Caleb Frysinger, Pate Davis, a Willie Gibson reception and finally another run by Pate Davis to the corner of the end zone for a touchdown and the Bearcats lead 14-0 with 6 minutes to go in the half.
After the kickoff, Highland Park scores quickly on a long pass play to make it an 8 point game at 14-6 Aledo.
Unable to move the ball Aledo punts the ball back to the Scots and they will operate from their own 40 yard line with 4:32 left in the first half.
Highland Park scores another touchdown with 37 seconds left in the half, but is unable to convert again, and it's Aledo 14 Highland Park
It's halftime in Dallas at the Tom Landry Classic. Aledo leads the Scots 14-12
Aledo receives the second half kickoff and sets uo on their own 20 yard line. A big run from Caleb Frysinger sets up a long Pate Davis to Willie Gibson pass for another Bearcat touchdown. After the PAT the score is Aledo 21 Highland Park 12 with 29 seconds gone in the third quarter.
The Offensive Line was outstanding on this drive, they look more comfortable the last series. They are stepping it up.
Highland Park will start at their 24 yard line. 2 first downs have the ball in Aledo territory when a great play by Aaron Hinsley, then an interception by Shea Wood get the ball back for the Bearcats at their 45 yard line. The Aledo defense is playing tough, in place and closing! The Hinsleys, Johnson, Mittie, Wood and Lowe stand out.
The Scots defense holds too, and Aledo punts. The Scots who will take over at their 18 yard line.
The Bearcats defense forces a 3 and out and the Scots punt is returned all the way to the Highland Park 21 yard line by Jonny Carter. The Bearcats lose 4 then gain 8. 4th and 5 from the 21 sets up a Chance Nevarez field goal, and the Aledo lead is now 24-12 with 5:30 left in the third quarter.
A nice return gets the Scots off to a good start at the Bearcats 49 yard line. A long pass play takes them to the Aledo 6 yard line. An offsides call on fourth and 4 moves the Scots back to the 9 yard line and the Bearcat defense takes over on downs. Again in this drive, the defense played with a sense of urgency.
Aledo ball from their own 9 yard line with 3:30 left in the third quarter. They are unable to get a first down, and punt the ball to the Scots 49 yard line where Highland Park will set up their offense.
The third quarter ends with Highland Park driving at the Aledo 20 yard line.
The Bearcats defense rises to the occasion and backs the Scots up 12 yards on two tackles for losses. Fourth and 23 is another sack by the Aledo defense and they will take over on downs at their 38 yard line with just over 10 minutes to go in the game, outstanding defensive stand.
The defensive unit is looking like they plan to be a force for this Football team, D line, backers, and backs are all moving to the ball well. interceptions, sacks, tackles for loss, all the signs of a sound and well prepared defense.
Another 3 and out forces an Aledo punt and the Bearcats recover a Highland Park fumble and get the ball back on the Scots 21 yard line. Jess Anders for about 9 yards, then Pate Davis for another 9 to the Highland Park 2 yard line. Jess Anders punches it in from the 2 and the Bearcats lead 31-12 with 6:30 remaining.
Aledo again recovers a fumble on the ensuing kickoff and will operate from the Highland Park 31.
Highland Park intercepts a Pate Davis pass and Pate saves a touchdown with a tackle at the Aledo 46.
Again Aledo's defense holds, and the Bearcats will get the ball back at their 49 with under 3:30 left.
Ben Thomes picks up a first down for Aledo. Thomes again to the Highland Park 17 yard line.
The Bearcats are driving at the Scots 10 yard line as the clock runs down and the Bearcats have a 31-12 win in their opener.
