Cora Elizabeth (Betsy) McLain died Friday, February 1.
Betsy was born on July 19, 1931 in New York. She married Charlie McLain on Valentine’s Day in 1971 and the couple lived together in east Parker County ever since.
A faithful member of Aledo United Methodist Church, Betsy taught first- second- and third-grade Sunday School classes for more than 20 years. She was a member of the church’s Missions Committee, and accompanied a mission trip to Farmington, New Mexico.
Betsy also enjoyed making jam for the church’s Lord’s Acre.
She enjoyed playing Bunko, engaging in couponing and refunding, and visiting Bossier City and Las Vegas. She loved her dogs, and on many occasions made a home for unwanted pets.
Her husband Charlie said they first met in 1946 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lakeland, Florida. In 1970, Charlie was living in Parker County, and Betsy lived in Florida. She came to Texas to visit, and Charlie asked if she wanted “to get hitched.”
When she returned to Florida, Charlie sent her engagement ring by mail in a 12-gauge shotgun shell box. According to Charlie, Betsy’s friends said she would be back in Florida in six months. But the marriage lasted. Their 42nd anniversary would have been Feb. 14.
After the wedding Charlie taught her how to cook and how to use an electric sewing machine. “I was 41 when I got married – I had to know how to cook,” Charlie said.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 10 at Aledo United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Aldersgate Enrichment Center, 5001 Hwy 84 E, Early, TX 76802 or to the Youth Mission program at Aledo United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 126, Aledo, TX 76008.
