No. 11 Ladycats hold off upset-minded Birdville in 5-4A tilt

October 5, 2010 by Tony Eierdam

Aledo remains in first place after big road volleyball victory

Aledo middle hitters Jordan Jacobs and Breana Sharratt combined for 29 kills, and sophomore setter Mallory Powell recorded a match-high 41 assists to lead the state-ranked No. 11 Ladycats to a 25-20, 25-14, 22-25, 25-23 victory over Birdville Tuesday night in District 5-4A action at Birdville.

The win raises the Ladycats record to 26-8, and 8-0 in district play.

Sharratt registered a match-high 16 kills, with Jacobs adding 13. Sharratt and Jacobs also finished with four blocks apiece.

Senior hitter Christa Daniel had a solid, all-around performance with 11 kills and a team-leading 23 digs. Senior libero Taylor Brown added 18 digs, with junior defensive specialist Hannah Loftin finishing with 14 digs.

Also at the net, senior outside hitter Lindsey Baird finished with four kills, while junior outside hitter Tyler Gromann recorded three stoppers.

Aledo had little trouble winning the first two games, but Birdville came back with a three-point win in game three to force a fourth game.

Game four was a nip-and-tuck affair that was tied at 20-20, 21-21 and 22-22. A kill by Jacobs in the middle off a short set by Powell gave the Ladycats a 23-22 lead.

However, on the ensuing rally, Aledo committed a service error and the game was tied again, this time at 23-23. On the following rally, Powell again went back to Jacobs in the middle, and the senior slammed a kill to bring game four to match point.

Baird stepped to the service line and fired a topspin ace to seal game four and the match, and keep the Ladycats undefeated and in control of the District 5-4A lead.
