9th, 5 p.m.
Scrappy Azle came into Tuesday night's District 5-4A match against the first-place Aledo Ladycats determined to knot up the district race.
The Lady Hornets show determination on defense, but still could not handle the potent Ladycat middle hitters as senior Jordan Jacobs and sophomore Breana Sharratt combined for 22 kills to lead Aledo past Azle, 25-14, 25-18, 25-20, in district action at the Aledo High School gym.
The win raises the Ladycats' district mark to a sparkling 6-0, while the Lady Hornets drop to 4-2. State-ranked No. 14 Aledo (24-8) will continue district play at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1, at rival Springtown (5-1).
Sharratt led all hitters with 13 kills, while Jacobs added nine stoppers. But the Aledo outside hitters also contributed as senior Christa Daniel and junior Tyler Gromann each recorded seven kills, with senior Lindsey Baird adding six.
The hitters were helped by a match-high 37 assists issued by sophomore setter Mallory Powell. Defensively, Daniel registered a match-high 28 digs, with senior libero Taylor Brown adding 15 digs.
Sharratt ended game one with a kill in the middle, while Jacobs gave the Ladycats a 2-0 lead in games when her timely block from the middle sealed game two.
Sharratt, off a cross-court feed from Powell, sent down the match-winning kill in game three to stop an Azle comeback attempt.
In sub-varsity action, the Ladycats junior varsity (6-0) swept Azle by a 25-9, 25-18 count, while the freshman "A" team (6-0) dropped the opener, 28-26, but rallied to take the next two games, 25-14, 25-12. The freshman "B" team ran its district record to 3-0 after a 25-23, 25-13 sweep of the Lady Hornets.
