Paced by eight kills each from Aledo senior middle Jordan Jacobs and junior middle Briana Sharratt, the state-ranked No. 11 Ladycats swept Brewer, 25-14, 25-12, 25-11, Friday night in District 5-4A action at Brewer
The win raises the first-place Ladycats district mark to 3-0 and 21-8 overall. Aledo will continue district play at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, at Boswell.
“I was pleased with the way the girls closed the last game out,” Ladycats head coach Kathy Goings said. “We didn’t do that Tuesday night (in a sweep over Nelson), and tonight we talked about keeping that intensity and focus at the end. The girls did that tonight.”
The Ladycats’ service game was also clicking as the team recorded eight aces, with Jacobs leading with three and junior hitter Tyler Gromann adding a pair.
Defensively, senior Christa Daniel registered a team-high 17 digs, with senior libero Taylor Brown adding 13. Also at the net, Gromann finished with six kills with Daniel adding four. Sophomore setter Mallory Powell finished with a match-high 30 assists.
Leading 20-14 in the opener, Jacobs sent down a kill from the right side and followed with five consecutive points from the line – including an ace – to seal the game. Daniel and Sharratt each sent down a kill in the run, with Powell adding a block.
In game two, the Ladycats led 10-7 before scoring seven unanswered points against the scrappy Lady Bears. Jacobs began the run with a kill from the middle, and after a Hannah Loftin serve, Brown fooled the Brewer defense with a stopper from the back row.
Jacobs added another kill on a slide move on the right side, and Brown followed with another kill from the back row to increase the AHS advantage to 14-7.
On the following rally, senior hitter Lindsey Baird set up Powell for a kill, and Powell used a bit of trickery on the ensuing rally with a setter tip to extend the Ladycats’ lead to 16-7. Aledo’s lead grew to 10 points when a Brewer return fell harmlessly into the net.
With the lead still at 10 points, 20-10, the Ladycats closed out game two when Sharratt got hot at the net. The 6-2 hitter slammed a pair of kills from the middle, and after a Brewer point, Sharratt brought the second contest to game point with a stopper from the middle courtesy of a short set from Powell.
Two rallies later, Powell sent a short set to Sharratt, who sent down a thunder spike from the middle to clinch the contest.
Brewer held tough in game three as Aledo led 9-5 early in the contest. But the Ladycats, behind a service run by Powell which included an ace, scored six unanswered points to take a 15-5 lead.
Aledo’s lead grew to 23-11 before a Brewer service error brought game three to match point. On the next rally, Brewer could not handle a Rachel Lincoln serve as the Ladycats won the third game by 14 points to sweep the match.
In sub-varsity action, the Ladycats junior varsity (3-0) defeated Brewer, 25-10, 25-13, while the freshman Ladycats (3-0) also swept Brewer, 25-18, 25-20.
