Aledo freshman wing Mallory Powell scored 16 points and junior guard Logan Mittie added 15, including nine in the fourth quarter, to lead the Ladycats to a 50-44 victory over Birdville Friday night in a key District 6-4A game at Birdville.
The win raises the state-ranked No. 17 Ladycats' district mark to 8-1.
Aledo and Springtown - a winner Friday night over Saginaw - are locked in a first place tie in 6-4A as Saginaw drops a game back.
The Ladycats will continue district play at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, at Brewer.
The Ladycats trailed 24-18 at the half. In the third quarter, AHS held the Lady Hawks to just seven points while scoring 19 to take a 37-31 lead into the fourth period.
A key to the game was second-half free throw shooting. At one point from the middle of the third period until late in the fourth, the Ladycats connected on 16 consecutive free throws, while Birdville struggled at the line.
Both teams scored 13 points in the final stanza as the Ladycats hung on for a six-point win.
Also scoring for Aledo were senior post Tara Gough and sophomore wing Caileen Tallant, each with six points, senior guard Melissa Howell with five, and sophomore guard Alanna Martin with two.
Tallant led the Ladycats with six steals, and Powell led AHS on the boards with eight rebounds.
Birdville raised its District 6-4A record to 5-2 after a 65-39 win over the Aledo Bearcats Friday night at Birdville.
The loss drops the Bearcats' district record to 1-6. The Bearcats will continue 6-4A play on Tuesday, Jan. 26, at Brewer.
Danny Glass led the Bearcats with 12 points while also pulling down five rebounds.
Also scoring for Aledo were Blake Reynolds and Matt Barron, each with six points, Dillon Hawkins and Robbie Spreier, each with five, Shane Smith with three and Gregg Lowe with two.
