Aledo forward Thomas Davis scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Bearcats to a 3-2 victory over Stephenville Thursday afternoon at the Moritz/Kia Tournament of Champions at Bearcat Stadium.
The Bearcats will play in the boys’ tournament semifinals at 2 p.m. tomorrow (Friday, Jan. 22) at Bearcat Stadium against the winner of the Denton/Red Oak match.
The Bearcats opened the scoring at the 29:15 mark of the opening half when Davis sent a corner kick to Brady Lain, who found the back of the net from in front of the goal.
Just six minutes later, Davis beat the Yellowjackets’ keeper with a 25-yard shot that reached the upper-right corner for a 2-0 lead.
The Bearcats’ lead grew to 3-0 when Lain found Davis in front of the goal. The senior blasted a shot from 15 yards out at the 20:06 mark.
Stephenville came back and scored goals at the 18:48 and 12;13 marks of the first half to cut the Aledo advantage to 3-2.
The second half was scoreless as Aledo keeper Justen Woody stopped a pair of point-blank shots and made a diving save on the other to preserve the victory.
Stephenville scored two shootout goals while holding the Aledo Ladycats scoreless to take a 3-2 win Thursday afternoon at the Moritz/Kia Tournament of Champions at Bearcat Stadium.
All four regulations goals were scored in the first half.
The Ladycats took a 1-0 lead with just three minutes into the contest when senior forward Taylor Thornton scored from 15 yards out after a corner kick by sophomore midfielder Leslie Coats.
Eight minutes later Stephenville tied the score at 1-1.
The Ladycats regained the lead, 2-1, at the 21:45 mark of the first half when sophomore forward Allyson Swift sent in a header off a corner kick from Coats.
But Stephenville tied the contest at 2-2 with 5:46 left in the opening half.
The second half was scoreless, setting up the shootout.
The Ladycats will resume tournament play tomorrow at noon at Aledo Middle School.
