WC presents “Return to the Forbidden Planet” Nov. 21-24
“What could be more fun than combining Shakespeare with rock music (and outer- space)?” asks Nancy McVean, Weatherford College theatre director.
The community will have an opportunity determine for itself Nov. 21-24, as McVean and her drama students and crew bring “Return to the Forbidden Planet,” by Bob Carlton to the Alkek Fine Arts Center. Loosely based on Shakespeare’s “The Tempest,” with quotes from several of his other plays, the setting is reminiscent of the B outer-space and aliens movies of the 1950s, combined with the old-time rock ‘n roll music of the same era.
“We blast off on a routine space flight and crash into the planet D’Illyria, and somehow, with perfect logic, the songs are worked into the plot,” said McVean. Shakespeare and rock and roll? Absolutely!”
The cast includes Gatlin Douglas as Captain Tempest; Stephen Sullivan as Prospero; Kylar Dobbs as Ariel; Delace McMahan as Miranda; Seth O’Bannon as Cookie; Salone Sasser as Gloria; Cole Lucas as Bosun and Joshua Davis as the navigational officer.
Rob Laney is the music director. Technical director is Joseph Nicikowski and costume designer is Diane Simons.
“Choosing this musical was because of the right cast, the right crew and the right time for something a little different,” said McVean. “The WC drama and music departments have done mostly traditional musicals that have you singing as you make your journey home. We hope the music in this show will make you want to sing along with us and enjoy even some dancing in the aisles! We think the Bard himself would approve.”
The production runs Nov. 21-23 at 7:30 p.m. The Sunday, Nov. 24, performance is a matinee at 2 p.m. Doors open one-half hour prior to each performance.
