Longtime Weatherford businessman Charlie Martinez believes in voluntarism, as evidenced by his ten years on the board of the Weatherford ISD Board of Trustees and multi-year stint as chair of the Friends of Scouting fundraiser—so serving as chair of this year’s United Way campaign, he says, is a natural fit.
“The United Way of Parker County serves so many agencies in the area,” he said of his newest community position. “The United Way reaches so many people. It’s a great cause.”
The United Way board of directors announced Martinez’ appointment this week as the group unveiled plans for its annual campaign. Martinez, owner of Martinez Tailors, is a longtime supporter of United Way and has volunteered in previous campaigns.
“We are excited and pleased that Charlie Martinez will be the chairman of our 2010 United Way campaign,” said Dennis Clayton, board president. “Charlie is an adept business and community leader and brings his experience, breadth of knowledge and passion for the entire Parker County community to lead our campaign. “
The United Way of Parker County allocates the funds raised each year during its campaign to nonprofit agencies that serve county residents. In 2009, the United Way invested $283,000 to programs that addressed health and wellness, education and youth, seniors, and families in crisis. Venture grants supported start-up programs in the area.
The 2010 United Way campaign will kick off 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., Friday, Sept. 17 at the Downtown Café in Weatherford with a “Wake up with United Way” breakfast. The public is invited to attend.
