Aledo scored five touchdowns in the controlled portion of its scrimmage at Burleson Friday night (Aug. 20) and scored four more times during the timed portion as the Bearcats completed their final tune-up before next week's season opener against Stephenville.
The 2009 Class 4A state champion Bearcats will open their season at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 27, at home against rival Stephenville.
Against Burleson in the controlled portion of the practice game, junior all-state running back Johnathan Gray scored on touchdown runs of 53 and 70 yards, and he caught a 10-yard TD pass from junior quarterback Matt Bishop.
Also, Aledo quarterback Clay Wooten threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Shea Wood, and a final touchdown in the controlled scrimmage was scored on a one-yard keeper by Bishop. The TD play was set up by a Bishop pass of 22 yards to junior receiver Todd Christian, who was shoved out of bounds at the Elks' one-yard line.
In the timed portion of the scrimmage (two 8-minute quarters), Gray raced for a 70-yard touchdown run, and Bishop completed a TD pass of 62 yards down the middle to junior receiver Michael Mann for a quick 14-0 lead.
Bishop and Mann hooked up again for a 23-yard score, and the final Bearcat touchdown was scored when Wooten connected with running back Ben Jopling for a 60-yard score.
Burleson scored on a short run for its only touchdown of the timed scrimmage, and its final drive was stopped on an interception by Aledo defensive back Ryan Chastain.
