Gordon was born in Haskell to Owen and Mayme Toliver. He graduated from Trent High School in 1955 and attended Cisco Jr. College and later transferred to Sul Ross University. He served in the U.S. Army in Alaska and played on the Yukon Command baseball team. He was employed with Cities Service Oil Company and their subsequent firm for 32 years; he retired in 1999 from the oil and gas industry. He was a member of North Side Baptist Church, the Glory Sunday School Class, the Gideon’s, and the Parker County American Legion, as well as volunteering with the Texas Baptist Men, Salvation Army Disaster Relief and volunteer Christian Builders.
Preceding him in death are parents; brothers Carroll Toliver and wife Mary, Bobby Toliver and Jim Toliver; brothers-in-law Raymond Rhoade and Bob Dulaney.
Survivors include wife Quilla; daughters Charolette Ragsdale of Irving, Whiney Smith and husband Allen of Aledo, Texas and Christy Herbstreit and husband Brian of Cedar Park; grandchildren Sara, Ryan and Emily Smith and Brett and Trey Herbstreit; sisters Linda Higgins and husband Brown of Missouri City, Glenna Rhoads of Abilene and Betty Jo Dulaney of Haskell; brother, Doug Toliver and wife Carolyn of Canton; sisters-in-law Sonja Toliver of Merkel, Nelda Toliver of Stafford and Judy Toliver of Breckenridge.
