Saturday marked the opening of District 6-4A basketball doubleheaders as the Aledo High School hoop teams hosted Brewer, with AHS coming away with a split.
Aledo junior guard Logan Mittie scored a game-high 31 points to lead the Ladycats to an 82-51 victory over the Lady Bears as the AHS ladies raised their league mark to a perfect 3-0.
The Aledo Bearcats followed the ladies in the boys' district opener against Brewer, falling 53-50 to the Bears as a late AHS comeback fell just short.
Both teams will continue district play on Tuesday (Jan. 5) at Boswell. The girls' game will tip off at 6 p.m. followed by the boys' contest at 7:30 p.m.
The Ladycats jumped out to a 20-9 lead after the first period as Mittie set the pace with 11 points.
On the strength of two three-pointers and five additional field goals, Mittie scored 17 of the Ladycats' 26 points in the second quarter as Aledo took a 46-23 lead at the break.
The Ladycats put the game away in the third period. Senior post Tara Gough scored six points in the quarter and freshman wing Mallory Powell added five as Aledo outscored Brewer 14-9 to take a commanding 60-32 lead into the fourth quarter.
Also scoring for the Ladycats were Gough with 11 points, Alanna Martin with 10, Powell with nine, Sarah Hawkins and Caileen Tallant, each with six, Jessica Lapointe and Shelby Stockard, each with three, Haley Loftin with two and Kendall Naquin with one.
Gough led the Ladycats with seven rebounds, with Powell grabbing five. Mittie led Aledo with six steals, while Martin added four.
The Bearcats led 22-21 at the half after junior guard Danny Glass canned a three-pointer late in the second quarter. Glass finished with a team-high 13 points.
The Bearcats trailed by two points, 38-36, as the game entered the fourth quarter. Brewer began the final stanza with a 7-0 run before a free throw by Gregg Lowe and a put back by Glass cut the Bears' lead to 45-39.
After a Brewer free throw, Glass was left alone on the right perimeter, and he drained a three-point bucket to cut the visitors' lead to 46-42.
Brewer led 48-43 with under a minute left to play, but with 36 seconds remaining Glass hit another trey from the right side to slice the Bears' lead to 50-48.
Forced to foul, the Bearcats put Brewer guard Alex Washington on the line. The guard calmly sank a pair of free throws to increase Brewer's lead to 52-48 with 26 ticks left on the clock.
Aledo put up a late three-point attempt that fell short, and with 13 seconds left to play the Bearcats had to foul again. Brewer nailed one of two charity shots to secure the win.
Aledo guard Dillon Hawkins scored on a put back with three seconds left, but Brewer ran out the clock to win the boys' district opener by three points.
Also scoring for the Bearcats were Ryan Talley with 11 points, Matt Barron and Dillon Huerta, each with eight, Shane Smith with five, Hawkins with four and Lowe with one.
