Aledo defeats Birdville 67-42

Game Recap:

Aledo gets the ball first and Johnathan Gray scores from 60 yards on the opening play. Point is good and Aledo leads 7-0 with 15 seconds gone in the 1st quarter.

Birdville is forced to punt after a drive stalls and Aledo works from their 37 yard line. A nice drive with big plays from Michael Mann, Ben Jopling and a touchdown run from 3 yards out by Johnathan Gray and it's 14-0 Aledo with 4:19 left in the 1st.

Birdville fumbles at their 29 yard line and Jordan Mittie recovers it to get the Bearcats the ball back. Matt Bishop makes a first down then 3 carries by Johnathan, the last one for 7 yards and the touchdown. PAT is good and the Bearcats lead 21-0 with 2:05 left in the 1st quarter.

That touchdown ties Johnathan Gray with T.A. McClendon for second all time nationally in scoring.

On the next Birdville drive they move the ball all the way down the field, with only 1:01 off the clock, and score.

Aledo receives the kickoff on their own 32 yard line. The big play on this drive is a 29 yard catch and run from Matt Bishop to Caleb Frysinger. Johnathan Gray covers the last 13 yards on the last 2 carries, the touchdown from 1 yard out, and Aledo is up by a 28-7 score 8 seconds into the second quarter.

Johnathan is now alone in second place all time in high school scoring nationally.

Birdville opens their 2nd quarter with a nice drive all the way down the field. A fourth down and a foot results in their second touchdown and PAT and they close the gap to 28-14 Aledo.

Jonny Carter returns the ball out to the Aledo 35 yard line and the Bearcats take over from there. Birdville's defense forces a punt after 3 plays and they get the ball back on their own 32. Another time consuming drive results in the third Birdville touchdown and PAT to make it 28-21 Aledo with 1:26 left in the 2nd quarter.

Caleb Frysinger has a 20 yard return from the 30 on the ensuing kickoff and the Bearcats set up at mid field. A big pass to Michael Mann gets the ball close and Johnathan Gray scores from 7 yards out to make it 35-21 Aledo after the PAT.

Time runs out in the First Half at 35-21.

Defensively there were big plays made in the first half by Shea Wood, Jared Hinsley, Jaylen Hill and Gunner Johnson among others.

Folks, this is football weather. Not the lovely cool weather kind. It's cold and the rain is blowing several different directions at the same time. The players and the spirit squads have been working hard just to stay warm.

Birdville will have the ball first to start the second half. They start from their 39 yard line.

A fumble gets Aledo the ball back and Johnathan scores from 14 yards out for his sixth touchdown of the game and the PAT is missed. 42-21 Aledo with 10:27 in the 3rd quarter.

Birdville returns the favor by driving the entire field again. They score on a keeper up the middle and now trail 41-28.

Aledo is back in business at their 33 yard line. Michael Mann has a big catch and Johnathan carries 3 times for the score, the last one from 2 yards out. A two point conversion makes the score 49-28 Aledo with 5:30 left in the 3rd.

Birdville covers the length of the field to the Aledo 5 yard line quickly. Tyler Klutts covers the last five yards on a run up the middle and Birdville closes to 49-35 with 3:29 in the 3rd.

Aledo sets up at their 32 yard line. Johnathan has a couple of nice runs and Matt Bishop completes a pass to Preston Bartley to the Birdville 25 yard line. They finish off the drive with a Matt Bishop to Willie Gibson 25 yard touchdown 55-35 Aledo after the PAT is missed to the left.

Birdville has the ball at their 33 to begin the 4th quarter. Aledo's Jaylen Hill and Jordan Mittie make big defensive plays but Birdville is still on the move in Aledo territory at the 41. Xavier Turner is a big part of the drive and the Birdville Hawks score again on a run by Dakota Reece to make the score 55-42 Aledo with 7:36 left in the game.

Aledo covers the field on a drive that features big plays by Parker Bradham, nice runs by Johnathan Gray and a scoring run by Michael Mann. The 2 point try is missed and it's 61-42 Aledo with 6:20 left.

Aledo kicks off and a nice play by the special teams pins Birdville deep in their own territory at their 3 yard line. Aledo's defense holds and forces the Hawks to punt.

They will take over at the Birdville 29 yard line with 4:43 remaining. Ben Jopling takes it to the 14 yard line. Caleb Frysinger for 5 to the 9. Ben Jopling to the 2 yard line. After a loss on 2nd down Pate Davis gets Aledo back to the 4 yard line and then takes it in from there in the bootleg. PAT is left again and it's 67-42 Aledo over Birdville.

Johnathan Gray had 31 carries for 265 yards and 7 touchdowns.
