The eighth annual “Talking Tombstones Tour” will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22 at the Old City Greenwood Cemetery, 300 Front Street in Weatherford. Tours leave every 15 minutes until the last tour at 3 p.m. This year’s tour examines the impact of the War Between the States in Weatherford and outside Weatherford: "Small Town Civility: Weatherford, Texas in 1861 - 1865."
Sites visited include David O. Norton - attorney, 1868 county judge who was almost hung for treason. In 1856 he surveyed and plotted the downtown square, and plotted Old City Greenwood Cemetery; Major Bell G. Bidwell, a liberal-minded attorney for the Texas and Pacific Railway Company, who became an invalid for two years as a result of battle wounds; "Captain" Robert W. Bonner, creator of the local company of Confederate veterans, "The Parker County Grays." He was owner of the grocery store located on the first floor of the Haynes Opera House on the downtown square; Dr. John Roger Mackenzie, mayor of Weatherford from 1886 - 1888 and medical surgeon with the 2nd Tennessee Calvary. He had a Weatherford medical practice located near the Cotten-Bratton funeral home; Oliver Loving, "The Dean of Texas Trail Drivers," supplied beef and pork to Confederate troops and created the Loving-Goodnight Cattle Trails. He was the inspiration for one of the characters of "Lonesome Dove;" Yeamans Griscom - all the battles in which he fought were led by General Robert E. Lee. Yeamans and his brother Elwood fought on opposite sides in the war. Astoundingly, both brothers suffered identical head wounds. The fact was not discovered until a reunion held 58 years after the end of the war.
Cost of the tour is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 5-9. The tour is not recommended for children under five, strollers, or those who need assistance walking. Tour length is one hour and 15 minutes, and no on-site restrooms are available. Tickets are available at the cemetery on tour day.
The Parker County Heritage Society dedicates all proceeds from the Talking Tombstones Tour to the preservation and maintenance of Old City Greenwood Cemetery.
