Those needing to check their blood pressure, cholesterol levels, vision screenings or get a flu shot will have the opportunity on Wednesday, Oct.12, at the annual free Weatherford College Health Fair, which kicks off at 8 a.m.
Sponsored by the WC Allied Health Department and organized by the WC chapter of the National Student Nurses Association, the fair brought in more than 300 people last year. Angie Layman, vice president of the NSNA and project manager for this year's fair, said she anticipates even more participants this year.
"This year's health fair is an excellent opportunity to get free health screenings, like blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol, and vision. You can also obtain great information about other health services in our community,” Layman said. "Also, many of our vendors will be handing out free samples of their products, and the WC cafeteria will be offering an especially healthy breakfast, too. There will be something for everyone."
The Health Fair will be located in the Doss Student Center on the College’s Weatherford campus from 8-11 a.m.
The Parker County Hospital District will offer flu shots for $10. Payment must be in cash or check; no credit cards accepted.
WC Phlebotomy Technology students will offer low-cost lab work. (Important: those interested in the lab work requiring a blood-draw are reminded to fast the morning of the health fair. For best results, it is suggested that no food or drink be consumed after midnight or Wednesday morning.)
Some of the other services or vendors that will be attending the Health Fair:
• blood pressure checks will be performed by RN students
• Freedom House information
• blood glucose checks
• Options Women's Clinic
• Dr. Miller of Dermatology Associates of Parker County
• Hometown Pharmacy
• Chase Baxter, Baxter Hearing Specialists
• Dr. Jessica Hals, Texas Oncology
• Solis Women's Health
• Wright Chiropractic
• AdvoCare products
Vendors of health-related services and products still are being sought to join the event. Those interested in setting up a booth, which are free are invited to call Angie Layman at 817-907-4151 for more information, or nursing instructor Carin Adams at 817-598-6437.
