Three players from the District 6-4A and state-champion Aledo Bearcats earned top district honors and 22 other Bearcats were also recognized in a vote of 6-4A coaches.
Aledo senior Danny Heiss was the unanimous choice for “Defensive Player of the Year," while sophomore running back Johnathan Gray was selected the league’s “Offensive Player of the Year."
Heiss recorded 83 tackles in seven district games, including 54 solo stops. Gray ripped through 6-4A with 1,222 yards and 28 touchdowns. Gray finished the season with 2,814 yards and 50 TDs in 16 games.
Rounding out top honors from Aledo were sophomore quarterback Matthew Bishop, who earned “Offensive Newcomer of the Year,” and head coach Tim Buchanan and his assistant coaches were chosen as “Coaching Staff of the Year.”
Bishop completed 97 of 145 passes in district play (67 percent) for 1,385 yards and 13 touchdowns. Buchanan and staff have compiled a perfect 14-0 record the last two seasons the Bearcats have competed in District 6-4A.
Earning first-team honors from Aledo were senior tight end Forrest Cook, senior offensive tackle Asher Zeeb, senior offensive guard Brandon Corley, junior center Garrett Young, senior kicker Andrew Kocurek, senior defensive tackle Michael Williams, senior defensive end Cy Wilson, senior inside linebacker Dillon Hawkins, sophomore outside linebacker Brady Lambert, junior cornerback Rylan Riney and junior safety Rob Blowers.
Earning second-team honors from Aledo were senior fullback/slot back Trey Ozee, senior receiver Stetson Stockard, junior defensive lineman Cody Brooks, junior defensive lineman Slaiter Vandertuin and junior cornerback Cameron Cunningham.
Bearcats earning honorable mentions were senior defensive end Devin Davis, sophomore cornerback Dane Davis, junior offensive lineman Kevin Frantz, and senior offensive linemen Nolan Cleveland, Hunter Stockon and Bragen Frank.
