The Cross Timbers Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas (NPSOT) will hear a program on landscaping and propagation of Texas native cactus, one plant family that thrives on drought conditions. The program, by Bill Utley, will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8 at the Harberger Hill Community Center, 701 Narrow Street in Weatherford.

For the past two years, Utley has represented the Fort Worth Cactus and Succulent Society (FWCSS) as President of the Texas Association of Cactus and Succulent Societies (TACSS).
Bill Utley’s earliest experience with xeric plants was as a teenager in Fort Worth where his father grew large pots of agaves. After 30 years in systems development at Bell Helicopter, Utley currently collects, propagates, and grows many agaves and cacti in his garden in Colleyville. He has collected cacti from ranches, hunting leases, field trips, plants sales, and nurseries. His main interest is in Texas native cacti and agaves. His hobby has grown over time with the addition of a cactus garden and a greenhouse. There have been lots of successes and failures but along the way but Bill has learned a lot about plants and met many interesting people.

As most Texas native cacti are small in size, their cultivation is very compatible with Bill’s other hobby of making pottery; both stoneware and terracotta pots, which he uses for his own plants and donates to fundraisers.

The Cross Timbers Chapter of the NPSOT meets the second Thursday of most months. The Chapter business meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. followed by a social at 6:45 p.m. with the program starting at 7 p.m. The mission is to promote the conservation, research, and utilization of native plants and plant habitats in Texas through education, outreach, and example. For more information, call Eileen Porter 817-596-5567. The public is welcome.
