(Wednesday, Dec. 31) By Tony Eierdam Both Aledo High School basketball teams were back in action this week at respective out-of-town tournaments. The state-ranked No. 9 Ladycats defeated host Sherman tonight (Wednesday) to claim the tournment title. Senior guard Hannah Christian was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, while senior Taylor Hays and sophomore Logan Mittie were selected to the all-tournament team. Both AHS teams will play at Brewer on Saturday, Jan. 3 in District 6-4A action. The Ladycats will face the Lady Bears at 3:30 p.m., while the Bearcats will open district play and take on the Bears at 5 p.m. The Bearcats fell to Granbury, 63-61, Monday at the Brownwood tournament, but came back that same day and handed host Brownwood a 70-62 defeat which was the Lions their first loss of the season. Aledo came back from a 19-point deficit against Brownwood, and Bearcats head coach Jeff Carroll said it was an experience the team can draw from later in the year. "We played great coming back from the (Christmas) break," he said. "Once we got down by 19, we just fought back. With the kind of character our kids have, we are always in any game. With our depth and knowing how hard we play, we are going to have a chance against anyone and in any situation if we just continue to play hard." On Tuesday, the Bearcats defeated Denton Guyer for the third time this season as Aledo finished 2-1 at the tournament and runs its overall mark to 10-6. Also on Tuesday, Ladycats sophomore guard Mittie canned a three-pointer with 1.8 seconds remaining in overtime to give the state-ranked No. 9 Aledo ladies a 67-64 victory over Frisco Wakeland. Mittie finished with 16 points. Senior guard Hannah Christian led the Ladycats with 27 points, with senior wing Taylor Hays adding 14.
