Aledo junior Sean O'Donnell smashed a bases-loaded double in the bottom of the 10th inning that drove in Nils Smith and Zack Scott as the Bearcats came from behind to defeat Lake Dallas in 10 innings, 3-2, Thursday night in the opening game of a Class 4A, best-of-three bi-district playoff series at Bearcat Field.
The Bearcats can wrap up the series tomorrow night (Friday, May 7) at Lake Dallas. The first pitch will be at 7:30 p.m. If a third game is necessary it will be at 2 p.m. Saturday (May 8) at Saginaw.
Each team had scored an unearned run in regulation as the game went into extra innings.
Lake Dallas scored another unearned run in the top of the 10th inning to take a 2-1 lead. Tyler McGee doubled with two outs, and as he was attempting to steal third base later in the frame the Aledo throw from the plate sailed into left field as McGee hustled to home plate to give the Falcons a one-run lead.
Trailing by a run, the Bearcats quickly loaded the bases in the bottom of the 10th. Senior Nils Smith and junior Zach Scott each singled to put runners at the corners. The next batter, senior Ryan Talley, drew a walk to load the bases.
O'Donnell followed and ripped a towering shot over the centerfielder's head and Smith and Scott scored easily as the Bearcats ran onto the field and "dog-piled" O'Donnell, who led the team with three hits.
"He (Lake Dallas relief pitcher Brandon Cogbill) threw me a fast ball right down the middle," O'Donnell said with a huge grin. "At first I thought I had popped it up, but then I realized I had hit it solid when it flew over the centerfielder's head."
Senior Ryan Conn earned the win with two innings of relief. Senior starting pitcher Austin Vassberg had a brilliant outing with a career-high 15 strikeouts in eight innings while allowing no earned runs on five hits with two walks.
