AHS Ladycats vs. Springtown at Aledo;
Varsity, 6:30 p.m.
JV, 5 p.m.
9th, 5 p.m.
Aledo senior Nils Smith ripped a line-drive single to center field to drive in Rylan Riney with the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Bearcats to a 5-4 victory over Birdville Friday night in a District 6-4A contest on Senior Night at Bearcat Field.
The win gives the Bearcats an 11-3 mark in district play. AHS is tied with Boswell as the Pioneers slipped past Brewer tonight to also end its season at 11-3.
The Bearcats and Boswell will play at 7 p.m. tomorrow (Saturday, May 1) at Saginaw in a second-place tiebreaker game. Both teams have qualified for the Class 4A playoffs.
The Aledo win completes a sweep of district-champion Birdville (12-2).
Calvin Loftis recorded the win in relief for AHS.
Smith may have never gotten a chance at the game-winning hit had it not been for another Aledo Smith.
With Aledo trailing 4-0 in the sixth inning, Cody Smith ripped a triple that drove in Lawton Rinker (who had reached on a double), Nils Smith (single) and Zack Scott (hit by a pitch) to cut the Hawks' lead to 4-3.
Cody Smith scored a batter later on a sacrifice fly to right field by Sean O'Donnell that tied the score at 4-4.
With the score tied going into the bottom of the seventh, designated hitter Andrew Tort drew a walk, Riney followed with a walk and Matt Bishop slapped an infield hit to load the bases.
The next batter, Rinker, ripped a shot to the left side of the infield, but Birdville shortstop Paul Hendrix caught the ball and alertly threw to third base for a double play.
However, Nils Smith followed with his game winner that drove in Riney from second base to give the Bearcats the win and set up tomorrow's tiebreaker game for second place.
