Kids Who Care, a non-profit international musical theatre company based in Fort Worth, presents the premiere of “Choices” July 28-31; the newest in a series of original musicals written for Kids Who Care by Texas playwrights and songwriters. “Choices” is an original musical that premiered off-Broadway at the Lamb’s Theatre in March 2003. This freshened and updated re-write reminds us that our lives are shaped by the decisions we make.
From picking what cell phone features or coffee flavoring is “essential,” to standing up to a bully or choosing to really live joyfully, “Choices” takes us through the hilariously ridiculous, gutsy and sometimes nerve-wracking decisions we face each day. With new songs and updated monologues, the show begins with the gut wrenching process of choosing teams for a basketball game. With each scene, the effect and power of small choices builds until it is evident that the cumulative effect of these many small and bad decisions can wreak havoc. As with all Kids Who Care original productions, the final message is one of hope that shines out into our world where the Kids implore the audience to, “Choose to live, Choose to love, Choose to hope, Choose to give.”
“Choices reminds us that words matter,” said Deborah Jung, founder and executive director of Kids Who Care, “That choosing to live a joyous life is not an accident but rather an intentional daily decision. At the end of the day, choosing for good creates the world we want to grow up in. I hope those who come, expect to be inspired to do so.”
“Choices” is a collaborative effort of Texas playwrights and songwriters, including Kids Who Care alumni. The youth actors at Kids Who Care helped steer the show’s content, through their words and feedback as the script and original songs evolved. The musical’s cast will include area youth plus international students who have traveled from Albania, Germany and Israel for an intensive theatre experience at Kids Who Care.
Performance times for “Choices” are as follows: July 28 at 7:30 p.m., July 29 at 10:00 a.m. and 7:30 p.m., July 30 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., July 31 at 2:00 p.m. All performances will be at the Scott Theatre, located at 1300 Gendy Street in Fort Worth. Ticket prices are $18 for ages 16 and up, $15 for those 15 and younger and $10 each for groups of 10 or more. For more information, call 817-737-5437 or visit www.kidswhocare.org.
