Bearcats just two strokes away from state-qualifying position
Both the Aledo Bearcats and Ladycats golf teams are in fourth place after the first round today (Monday, April 19) of their respective 36-hole, District 6-4A regional golf tournaments in San Angelo.
The second and final round of both tournaments will be tomorrow (Tuesday, April 20) in San Angelo. The top two teams from the regional tournaments advance to the Class 4A state tournament in Austin.
The Bearcats shot a 306 at Quicksand Golf Course and trail first-place Wolfforth Frenship (291) by 15 strokes. However, Aledo trails second-place Fort Worth Arlington Heights (304) by two strokes and third-place Wichita Falls Rider (305) by one stroke.
"It is not unheard of to make up 15 strokes, and if we clean up our mistakes from today we will have a chance to catch Frenship," Aledo head golf coach Greg Nelson said. "But our goal is to qualify for the state tournament, and we are in good position to do that."
Jeffery Merrell and Taylor Mihok each shot a 76 to lead the Bearcats. Chilton McKnight and Dillon Trimmer followed as each shot a 77, and Sean Shelton finished with a 79.
Brandon Wilkins, who qualified for the regional tournament as an individual medalist, shot an 85.
The Ladycats shot a 371 in the opening round of the girls regional tournament at Bentwood Country Club and trail first-place Arlington Heights (335) by 36 strokes. Mansfield Legacy (342) is in second place and Granbury (352) is third.
Chelsea Mercer shot a 91 to lead the Ladycats. Other Aledo scores include Haley Gann with a 92, Jenny France and Jesse Bearden, each with a 94 and Alicia Stacy with a 96.
