Aledo sophomore Johnathan Gray rushed for 252 yards and scored four touchdowns, including an 89-yard sprint late in the fourth quarter that clinched the game, and senior quarterback Trey Ozee added another score to lead the Aledo Bearcats to a 35-21 victory over the Brenham Cubs Saturday afternoon in the Class 4A, Division II state championship game at D. K. Royal Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin.
The state championship win was the second in Aledo High School history and the first in Class 4A.
The victory was also aided by the Bearcats' defense which stopped a Brenham fourth and one at the AHS 10 late in the game. Gray's championship-clinching run followed three plays later, on third and eight.
"It is hard to explain my feelings right now," Bearcats head coach Tim Buchanan said. "All I know is the Bearcats won. It took too long to get us here, and hopefully we will get back here real soon. These kids played their rears off all year long. Trey Ozee started our season off at quarterback with a win, and we end the season with a win with Trey at quarterback.
"Johnathan had another great game, and I am glad he is a sophomore. He is a heck of a football player and a great kid. But all of our kids did a great job of executing not just in the playoffs, but all season long. This is a great group of kids."
